What an enlightening experience it was to attend the 2024 Ascend National Leadership Conference with the catchy and meaningful slogan - “We Lead Together”. Over 2,500+ AAPI and ally professionals from over 250 companies gathered in Las Vegas. As an Asian Immigrant, it was a unique opportunity to feel- for the first time- not like a minority among big crowds of professionals from Fortune 500 companies. There were a lot of opportunities for networking and hands on learning during the workshop sessions, but I will condense it into my top three main takeaways… here you go: 1) Finding the right mentors and sponsors within your network circles - a crucial process that may take some time and patience. 2) Bringing your true self to your workplace and embracing that as you progress professionally. Authentic leadership is the key to your success, it’s your overwriting uniqueness that nobody can take from you. 3) Prioritizing your Mental health and Work Life balance- specially for those who came from cultures that promote modesty. Anando A Chowdhury did an amazing job representing Merck on the big stage, giving insightful advice on how to manage your mental well being. I mentioned last week attending the EMEA Emerging Leaders Summit organized by Oracle's Women Leadership organization. Let me just say it was one of the most inspiring and interesting experiences in my corporate years, and I have a few under my belt. What made it special? Part of the prework was taking a Clifton Strengths assessment, and my top 3 strengths were Intellection, Relator, and Ideation. So, when some of the brightest minds of the industry came and shared their ideas and insights with us, I was fascinated. I received new tools and found motivation that will allow my team and me to be more successful. I could have done better with networking, but thanks to Patty Azzarello, I now feel more confident in developing this skill. Here are the messages I resonated with most, and I hope they will inspire you too: - Start with just saying hello to people you have not connected with in a while. Set some time aside for this every week. - More listening, less talking. - Learn and use your customers' terms and language; don't enforce yours. - You are as successful as your customers are. - Focus on your strengths but look out for their blind spots, too. - Bring your real self to work more. - It's ok to be neurodiverse at work. - There is room for everyone; we complete each other. - Prioritize sleep, a balanced diet, and some type of movement. - Get a mentor. The advice shared above struck a chord with me, emphasizing the importance of genuine connections, personal well-being, and the value of embracing diversity in the workplace. Each point offers a practical step towards not just professional success, but also personal fulfillment. It would be impossible to cover all the interesting topics discussed at the summit, but the insights shared have left a lasting impression on me. I'm immensely grateful to the amazing organizers, speakers, and participants who made this event a reality. Their dedication and passion have not only inspired me but have also provided me with the tools and confidence to strive for greater success in my professional journey. As I look forward to applying what I've learned, I'm excited about the future and the positive changes these new approaches will bring to my team and me. This experience has been a reminder of the power of collective wisdom and the importance of continuous personal and professional growth. Despite many organizational efforts to nurture women's talent, there still exists a disparity in the promotion and appointment of high-potential women to senior roles. This #memberspotlight needs no extra spotlight to shine bright! Highlighting Monica Buren, MBA, Supplier Diversity Manager with the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. In February 2019, Monica was named Diversity Hero by the St. Louis Small Business Monthly Magazine. That same year in December 2019, she received the Advocate of the Year award from Mid-States Minority Supplier Development Council. Then, in May 2023, she was again named Diversity Hero by the St. Louis Small Business Monthly Magazine and in August 2023, was accepted into The St. Louis Business Diversity Initiative – Fellows Experience Leadership Program 2023/2024. The best career advice she ever received? From her mentor, he said be open to pivoting into new spaces. She notes, this can mean different things for different people, but for her, it means being open to exploring new industries and roles even if they didn't necessarily match her original career goals. Her mentor also said to venture outside of her comfort zone, meet new people - you never know where that next connection could lead you. Show up early and be ready, become a lifelong learner, check in with your career path once per year- you may find your goals and career designs have changed; search for the value in feedback or criticism, cultivate perseverance – every failure is not a final “NO” and always, always keep your promises.
