Instructional Designer and L&D specialist. Language-obsessed writing nerd with nearly two decades of experience educating and empowering others.
If you're an experienced #instructionaldesigner in my network who's #opentowork and looking for a remote opportunity, check out this Senior ID role at Purdue. I wanted to re-share this job ad with a little more context about my experience working here. If you're familiar with my content, you should already know I'm brutally honest about… pretty much everything. In my previous role, I was working 50+ hours a week, I was basically "on call" 24/7, and I was completely burned out. I wanted to grow my skills while finding some semblance of balance. I found it at Purdue. A few notable things I'll highlight: 💡 My coworkers are not only knowledgeable but kind, empathetic, and eager to share their knowledge and expertise–all of which is incredibly rare in academia. 💡 Our team is growing. Purdue is making incredible investments in online education and course design, which means I've had many opportunities to work with some amazing SMEs on a diverse array of courses and projects. This summer alone, I've worked on courses related to Python coding and data analytics, Lithography, Sterile Processing certifications, and a host of Lean Six Sigma topics. 💡 Our input is actually valued, and this is one of the first academic roles I've held where it's clear that managers are actually listening to their team's needs, concerns, and suggestions. 💡 We're given opportunities to grow our skills and play to our strengths. I was apprehensive about transitioning to ID because it was not exactly aligned with my previous experience. However, our team includes folks from diverse academic backgrounds and skill sets, and folks are often afforded opportunities to align their strengths with the projects we work on. In short, it's been a great place to work. If you have questions about the role, I'm happy to answer… or point you in the direction of someone better equipped to provide insight. 🛑 If you've made it this far, you should also know about the following requirements of this role, since it's a Senior ID position: ➡ Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Educational Technology or related field ➡ Three (3) years of instructional design experience ➡ One (1) year of direct experience working one on one with faculty, instructors, or subject matter experts to design, develop, and support delivery of instruction ➡ Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of experience and education

If you're looking to make the move to a career in #instructionaldesign, you may find yourself wondering just exactly what it is instructional designers do. I was there too when I was looking to leave the k-12 teaching world behind. I discovered instructional design, and found a few videos of instructional designers describing what their work is like, but I always seemed to come away with more questions. Now that I'm an instructional designer in a large public school district, I want to help those wondering about ID to get a good picture of what an ID job looks like. So, Devlin Peck allowed me to create a video for his YouTube channel to do just that. Of course, the role can look different depending on the industry, the size of the ID team, and a variety of other factors, but I think the video will give prospective IDs a good idea of what the job might look like for them. Check out the video with the link in the comments below. And to any fellow IDs who may check out the video: let everybody know in the comments what similarities and differences there are in your ID job!

I want to talk about how tired I am. As an Instructional Designer with 4 Master's degrees, college teaching experience, and over 20 years in this field, I'm just tired. I'm tired of jobs that expect an ID to do the jobs of 3 people (the actual instructional design, project management, and development) while only being low-balled paid for 1. I'm tired of managers who don't really understand the role and who keep asking for more. I'm tired of this job that continually asks IDs to do more - now I see jobs that want experience using AI on top of all the other requirements. Why not give your ID that experience? I saw a job posting yesterday that listed 17 bullet points for role expectations, and another 9 bullet points for preferred qualities. The pay range topped out at $82k. Excuse me? Sigh. And I wonder, why so many IDs are so willing to keep accepting more and more expectations without the compensation? Anyway, I'm just tired of playing the game.

Are instructional design (ID) jobs still in demand? Definitely! Yes, the market may feel competitive with many #OpenForWork banners - but that’s a sign of ongoing demand for skilled ID professionals. Businesses continue to recognize the value of instructional design in developing effective training programs. I’ve also seen some companies might be cautious about growth due to factors like budget constraints. I also know there's an alternative that can benefit both businesses and ID professionals: staff augmentation. This approach offers flexibility so businesses scale their teams as needed, negotiate payment terms, and maintain control over project timelines. And ID jobs would just keep existing! At my company, we're actively seeking ID professionals, confident that the industry will keep evolving, just a little bit different than before the pandemic. Just imagine: having another team member from an external company but working the exact hours you need them to. An extra set of hands is much needed in small L&D teams! I was inspired by a recent discussion with Starla Wehrli, M.Ed. Instructional Designer - I had fun chatting with you!! What do you think? Have you explored staff augmentation or know someone who has? --- 🔔 Tap the profile bell to catch my next post. ✉️ Need an eLearning team by your side? There can be two different types of instructional designers depending on the company you work for. I have experienced the Jack or Jill type of instructional designer more than any other type, but I have experienced both. There are pluses and minuses to both, but it really comes down to your personal preference. Both instructional designer types are equally good. You have to decide where you want to start and where you want to end up and create the path which gets you there. Personally, I like knowing a little bit about it all and having my areas where I shine most but there is no right or wrong answer. The advantage of knowing a little about it all is that it makes you more marketable in the job market. Interested in the pros and cons of these two instructional designers?
