The U.S. National Whitewater Center is working on plans to build a new conference, education and events space on its campus in Charlotte along with new projects in Virginia and potentially in Raleigh. Jeff Wise, CEO of the Whitewater Center, told the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Commission on Wednesday that the Whitewater Center wants to build a new leadership development center, a conference and event facility, an environmental education center and an indoor climbing facility on its Charlotte property. Wise said the estimated cost of the projects is $25M. “We do an enormous amount of meetings and groups out there,” Wise said. “We need to put them somewhere. They not only want to come out and go zipline, they need gathering space. They need to be able to meet.” The Whitewater Center operates a 1,000-acre campus in northwest Charlotte that offers whitewater rafting, biking and hiking trails, rock climbing, ziplining, outdoor concerts and more. Wise told the Ledger that with only 19 years left on the center’s land lease with the county, they’d like a longer term commitment on the land before investing in more development. 📷Shutterstock photo Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ez9ZisjZ #thecharlotteledger #clt #cltledger #USWhitewatercenter

Process, People, Place: the role of stewardship in residential development. People: nurturing the community “Placemaking is not merely about make the aesthetic experience and appearance of space. It is clearly also about the creation and nurturing of a new community that will turn the space into a vibrant, attractive place…Part of the custodial role of stewardship in development must be to engage and to listen, and to deliver on promises early. It is not to tell people what they want, but rather to create an environment that encourages and enables conversation so that development objectives are shaped by the community as it emerges.” Read more from the insightful roundtable discussion we held with Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation on the role of stewardship.
