Whether you’re a gaming leader looking to appoint your next outstanding hire, or you’re ready to join the C-suite of your dreams, the team you entrust with your brief should be purpose - rather than target-driven, and insist on creating a great culture over blind growth. This means a good deal of behind-the-scenes work should focus on: • Honing listening skills; sometimes it’s what’s left unsaid that proves most important • Leveraging data agility and transparency; you need the full picture, not just the positive parts • Iterating search processes for maximum efficiency; industry best practices constantly evolve Our team lives and breathes the exhilarating, innovative and technology-led world of video games, and we care deeply about its future. We’re also partial to a little Mario Party from time to time. #GamingLeadership #ExecutiveHiring #CSuite #SearchProcess #VideoGames

Why is hiring/retaining talent so hard in gaming? Per Omdia, the backend part of the stack is as hard as the other pieces of the stack to maintain. When an engineer leaves one spot for another, there is a lot of onboarding challenges built in to the experience - including what tools they are familiar with. ⚙ When teams have central tech orgs, this makes onboarding to new studios even more difficult. ❓ How do you think the standardization of “backend tools” might impact retention when it comes to the job market in gaming? 💻 Could there be a world where someone shares they have “five years of Pragma experience” or “4+ years working with Heroic Labs tools”? #gamedev #backendtech #buildvsbuy #hiring #opentowork

If you are a game developer, you must use this post to leverage and get noticed by the thousands of recruiters among my 40K connections on Linkedin. Context: Every Saturday, we create a post for game developers to expand their network by dropping in their intros and portfolios. Next, to better help them in their search for a new role, we add them to a resource called hashtag#HumansOfGaming — a list of all the game developers who are active in the industry. We then tag recruiters, hiring managers, and game studios who have posted job openings most recently and point them towards #HumansOfGaming. (Link in the comments) So, yet again, I am inviting recruiters and game developers to connect virtually and get to know the community even more. If you are a recruiter, hiring manager, or game studio: a. Drop in your latest job opening, if any. b. Check out #HumansOfGaming before looking elsewhere for your next hire. c. Reach Out to people you see fit for your roles in the comments below. If you are a game developer, drop in: a. Your introduction. b. Your current location. c. Open for relocation status. d. Most important: Link to your portfolio Lastly, tagging all the individuals and game studios with their most recent hiring posts: Jason Ragatz - https://lnkd.in/gd4taKhy (Insomniac Games) BJ Bigley - https://lnkd.in/gGPBBFgS (Azra Games) Liko-Paul Pinsonnault - https://lnkd.in/ghQNaZgt (Soliton Interactive) Michael Herriger - https://lnkd.in/gTkJHqDQ (Atlas Creative) Connagh H. - https://lnkd.in/gmp3yp29 (Red Chop Games) Dom Qwek - https://lnkd.in/gGPTJ-cD (Bonfire Studios) Mateusz Albrewczynski - https://lnkd.in/gvgd7nUt (Blizzard Entertainment, WOW) #layoffsupport #hiring #networking #gamesnetwork

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲!! ... is it? You've been laid off from your dream job, now what? It breaks my heart, to see so many people going through this, and I wish I could do more to counter balance the situation. I can't hire everyone, but I can at least share my thoughts on the matter, so we can all understand and figure out what's next. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁? The latest games industry reports clearly shows a turning point in both consumer spend and downloads. When markets mature, companies turn from mad growth to cost efficient machines, meaning, they have to reduce cost, slow down on hiring staff, and laying off usually around 10-15% of the workforce. It happened before, and it will happen again. In the dot com bubble, crypto, and it will happen again with AI. Every time an industry is growing, the race is on, and it's a winner takes all. Those who do well, do really well and those who don't, close shop or have to lay off staff. 𝗢𝗸, 𝘀𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲𝘀? Well, as it turns out, there's a 3rd type of company, that doesn't jump all in on each trend, and instead values people more than opportunity, as they understand that long term growth is more important than short term revenue. As Nintendo or Supercell, here at Bigfoot Gaming we care about forging great teams, and giving people the tools to grow, more than revenue and big numbers, because we understand, that the best teams make the best games, even if it takes years. As the market matures and the industry starts hiring again, I think is important to choose beyond pay or working on "big titles" and prioritize long term growth and people first companies instead. 𝘐'𝘮 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘦'𝘭𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘨𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯. 𝘚𝘰 𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵! 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸? I would love to hear people's stories both present and from the past! #gamesindustry #gamesjobs #games #gamedevelopment #gamedevjobs

Today we received the difficult news that Timbre Studios is closing its doors. This is an extremely challenging moment for me, my family, and for all my incredible team, best known as Timbreroos. I learned that life sometimes has its ups and downs and I want to focus my energy and strength where I believe I can be impactful – making positive changes for people, helping them out, and crafting incredible games. I can’t stress enough how passionate, talented, and exceptional our team at Timbre is. What we were creating together was truly special and it is hard to see that coming to a stop. Here's what's coming up for me, my key strengths, and ways you can support us: TL;DR: 1. Now until July: I’ll support my Timbre colleagues, connect with recruiters, and visit my family who I haven’t seen in two years. 2. August onwards: move onto my next full-time job in Production. The top 3 reasons you want to work with me: 1. I’ve spent over 13 years working on project management / game production, including 5 years at Xbox/Microsoft Studios with multiple disciplines from pre-production to live operations. 2. Amplifying my team’s strengths is my passion. I love balancing project goals with a healthy, player-centric development. 3. I love games. My passion for video games and helping people was the main reason why I specialized in game production. The best 3 ways you can help 1. Hire Us! The team at Timbre is exceptional. If you have any open roles or questions, feel free to reach out. 2. Network and write a Recommendation. Feel free to connect and share a recommendation if we ever worked together. 3. Share this post. The more people who see this, the faster we can find opportunities for everyone. #timbregameslayoffs #sumodigital

Question for game dev hiring managers: How does “shipping” a AAA game correlate with a candidate’s likely success in an open role? Specifically, how is this different than experience working on a AAA game? These are always separate requirements, it’s never and/or. So why are you filtering out more experienced candidates that didn’t get to work on games that finished over less experienced candidates who were lucky enough to be in the right place(s) at the right time? Is there an implicit conclusion that game devs whose games don’t ship are actually less qualified than those whose games launch? What’s the reasoning? Full disclosure: I’ve never shipped a AAA game.
