Federal holidays, like today, are much more than a paid day off. Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. As we reflect on the meaning of this day, it is important to acknowledge the many freedoms we have in modern-day society. These include, but are not limited to: the freedom to pursue education the freedom to choose what career to pursue the freedom to travel and live in different towns, states, and countries the freedom to have access to food around every corner We all experience these freedoms to different degrees. That is why it is important to express gratitude for what we have each and every day. So as many people enjoy their day off today, take some time to reflect on all the freedom and privilege we experience.

This week is an important beginning of idealistic views of who we are as a people. Wednesday is the celebration of the same date in 1865 when the last slaves were freed in Galveston, Texas. The potential idealism that fueled some during that moment as they headed into a new territory of freedom is overwhelming to imagine. Their dreams of freedom went from feeling like a fantasy to a possibility. And in just over two weeks, we will be celebrating the freedom and independence of our country from another power of dominance and oppression. Back then, there were sets of ideals and principles of a free nation that the founding Americans were willing to die for. But there are similarities in both instances. The days we mark as June 19th and July 4th are worth celebrating, but upon reflection, they also generate a reflection of all the action that was required then and is required now. At a team meeting this morning, there was an interesting ice breaker. Would you rather meet your great, great grandparents or your great, great grandchildren. Put into the context of these next two dates of celebration, I am not sure what would be more enlightening; bringing my great, great grandparents to now or my great, great grandchildren. What would they think of where we are, and the progress we have (and haven't made)? While there will be reminders of the divisiveness over the next two weeks, I plan to reflect with my family and three kids on all that has been accomplished. I plan to re-teach the ideals of what can be for all of us when we care about our fellow citizens and believe in the better world ahead of us. Happy Juneteenth Week, everyone.

4th of July is very significant in American history marking the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The United States officially became its own nation. Many USA citizens celebrate America’s birthday with festivals, parades, fireworks, barbecues and other festive activities. With the complexities of American history, and the current civic/political environments, traditions and celebrations may not everyone's experience. I want to share some thoughts to help in your own 🇺🇲 4th conversations and events. The Declaration of Independence states three key ideas that built America’s foundation, but there are three key ideas the document expresses: 1. All men are created equal and have rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. 2. It’s the government‘s responsibility to protect those rights. 3. The people have the right to defend these rights for themselves and their fellow Americans. These principles are worth celebrating. All are equal and have rights. You deserve protection. I love this time of year. I love CELEBRATING 🇺🇲 freedom, diversity, and America. The complexities of America deserve our complex conversations.
