SA Biodiversity South African National Biodiversity Institute in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), launched the second edition of the Mapping Biodiversity Priorities guide at the 16th Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD CoP16). First published in 2016, the guide has been recognised as a comprehensive resource for governments, researchers, and conservationists worldwide. SA Biodiversity South African National Biodiversity Institute Chief Executive, Shonisani(Shoni) Munzhedzi, emphasised “Mapping answers the question of what biodiversity a country has and where it is located. This sequential approach results in the exact information needed to compile several headline indicators of the GBF.” Currently, this mapping approach is being applied in a project involving South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, and Malawi, reflecting SANBI's role as a technical and scientific subregional support center for the CBD. KEPSA PARTICIPATES IN THE NATIONAL BIODIVERSITY STAKEHOLDERS WORKSHOP The Kenya Private Sector was represented by #KEPSA at a two-day National Biodiversity Stakeholders Workshop which started on 8th May 2024. The workshop, organized by UNDP KENYA and NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT TRUST FUND (NETFUND-Kenya), aims to introduce stakeholders to the Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) program and its processes. The goal is to develop comprehensive National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and work plans that include biodiversity finance solutions for Kenya while fostering ownership and active engagement among partners. This initiative stems from Kenya's receipt of funding from the Government of Norway (NORAD) to implement Biodiversity Finance Plans between 2023-2026, highlighting global urgency to allocate more finance towards biodiversity goals. COP16 biodiversity summit reveals disappointing numbers for conservation funding: Summit talks on how to mobilize the billions of dollars needed to halt biodiversity loss this decade were stuck on Monday. Countries were at an impasse over how to fund conservation and other key decisions as the U.N. COP16 biodiversity summit entered its second week on Monday, with nations pledging millions of dollars rather than the billions needed. http://dlvr.it/TFrjRD

We are pleased to present our new guidance! 🎉 At the CBD #COP15, countries committed to updating their National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and Biodiversity Finance Plans (BFPs). The NBSAPs are crucial for implementing the #CBD at the national level, while the BFPs help close the biodiversity financing gap and achieve the objectives of the NBSAPs. Countries can maximize their impact on biodiversity conservation efforts by integrating these mechanisms. 💉Our latest report provides a roadmap for countries looking to develop these plans. 🔗 Download the report 👉🏻 https://lnkd.in/d5-cgDPg Let us work together to protect our planet's #biodiversity! This chart from NatureFinance's report on the emerging biodiversity credit landscape across Africa, clearly shows the gap between current funding and that which is required to protect nature. Private finance can play a crucial role in closing this gap. Our carbon assets have been an effective mechanism for channeling private capital into conservation in a scalable way, currently channeling millions of dollars per year to our community partners who use the funds to protect their natural resources. We are commited to exploring and evaluating opportunities to develop, and collaborate in the development of, biodiversity crediting projects. We see tremendous potential in this evolving market to channel finance to nature conservation and support efforts to close the global biodiversity funding gap. 📈 This report is well worth a read if you are interested in learning about the development of the biodiversity credit market across Africa. Uzbekistan has finalized its biodiversity expenditure and gained important insights. In 2022, only 0.5% of the national budget was allocated to environment and biodiversity spending. This revelation underlines the urgent need for a robust budget tagging system. By aligning spending with #biodiversity commitments, Uzbekistan can revolutionize data tracking and analysis and pave the way for more informed decisions. The report also looks at public funding for biodiversity. It covers the period from 2020 to 2022 and even includes projections from 2024 to 2028, outlining three scenarios for future spending and providing concrete recommendations for strengthening biodiversity conservation efforts. 🌱 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gRgiDh4m Tulkin Rajabov Tracey Cumming Ainur Shalakhanova UNDP Uzbekistan

BIODIVERSITY NET GAIN CALCULATIONS FOR PLANNING APPLICATIONS Since 2nd April 2024 all new planning proposals in England must adhere to Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) conditions. This means that you must demonstrate that your proposed development increases biodiversity by at least 10%. https://lnkd.in/e_327gDC #planning #biodiversity #FCG

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) became mandatory for major developments in England on Monday 12 February. From April, smaller sites will also be subject to the requirements and from November 2025 it will apply to nationally significant infrastructure projects too. The new planning condition requires developers to submit biodiversity gain plans as part of their planning application. Developments will need to demonstrate at least a 10% increase in biodiversity and maintain this for 30 years or more, either on-site, off-site or both. Demand for BNG units from biodiversity offsetting projects will now increase.
