DataKirk is thrilled to celebrate 🙏 Olaoluwa Erinfolami He is one of our exceptional peer leaders on the Datakirk Youth Internship Initiative (DaYii) and has just completed a remarkable research placement experience on Embodied Carbon with OW Ocean Winds in Edinburgh. At just 16 years old, Olaoluwa has already demonstrated impressive dedication and growth, working on a topic that many in society may not yet fully understand—engineering's impact on environmental sustainability. Happy to see Olaoluwa gain invaluable skills in Advanced Excel, developing an Embodied Carbon Calculator—a tool designed to help engineers estimate emissions and make eco-friendly decisions. His ability to apply his research to real-world solutions speaks volumes about his potential as a future leader. A huge thank you to his mentors, Ethan Glennie and Daniela Szumilas, for their immense support throughout his journey. A special thanks as well to Nuffield Research Placements and OW Ocean Winds for making this incredible opportunity possible! Onivaha L. Timi Olanrewaju Abdulmuiz Adaranijo Iyenoma Ediae Let’s all take a leaf out of Olaoluwa’s book and think about how we can make more sustainable choices in our everyday lives! 🌱 #Datakirk #DaYii #YouthLeaders #Sustainability #EmbodiedCarbon #NuffieldResearchPlacements #FutureLeaders #GreenEngineering #PeerLeadership

Embodied Carbon... I never thought that by the age of 16, I would write a detailed report about a subject that many in the society I live in, are deprived knowledge of. I had the incredible opportunity to do a hybrid research placement on Embodied Carbon with OW Ocean Winds in Edinburgh for 2 weeks. During the placement, I did lots of research about how engineering decisions can impact environmental sustainability, specifically investigating the cable systems that are used in offshore wind farms and the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere when these cables are being manufactured. The research also involved looking into ways that engineers can make more sustainable decisions for the benefit of the environment 🌎. I gained lots of valuable and beneficial skills during this research placement. I was taught how to use Advanced Excel functions to develop an Embodied Carbon Calculator and this calculator is used to estimate carbon emissions and help engineers make more environmentally conscious decisions 🌎. After lots of research for two weeks, I then had to write an extensive report on my findings. This is a skill I didn't have but I am so grateful to be able to learn it because I am positive it would be beneficial to me in my future projects. Finally, I had the opportunity to display the summary of my findings on a board at the Advanced Research Centre in University of Glasgow along with the rest of my placement colleagues. I would like to thank both of my mentors, Ethan Glennie and Daniela Szumilas for immensely helping me throughout the whole course of my research placement!, I could not have done it without them. I would also like to thank Nuffield Research Placements and OW Ocean Winds for this incredible opportunity and experience. Overall, the placement has helped me to realise how crucial sustainable decision-making is for the future of the planet. This has pushed me to be more sustainable with the everyday decisions I make. What about you? 🙂🌎
