The Law Enforcement profession has been suffering heavily from a recruitment and retention crisis for the last 4+ years and many Law Enforcement Leaders have spoken about it repetitively. However, why is it only now that the main stream media is picking up on this? Maybe it is because community members across the nation, especially those in large cities, are more concerned for their safety and are in fear of crime more now that in the last 30 years and are speaking out against the anti-police/defund the police mantra that activists and many in main stream media have been pushing for years. Or, it might be that the main stream media sees that the defund the police movement has failed at everything except to demoralized current Law Enforcement Officers, keep good men and women from entering law enforcement, and to reduce public safety and they trying to distance themselves from their previous stand. Who knows? Historically, the LAPD has been understaffed per-capita when compared to the New York City Police Department and the Chicago Police Department but 8,800 is insanely low. Law Enforcement Leaders nationwide must continue to speak out regarding the recruitment and retention crisis in our profession. At the same time, Law Enforcement Leaders must be implementing strong, effective, character and principle based leadership strategies and practices in their agencies that allows the men and woman of their organizations to have trust and confidence in the leadership of department and local government and feel the trust of the community. #police #policeofficer #officers #officers #lawenforcement #lawenforcementofficer #sheriff #policechief #deputy #criminallaw #law #crime #criminials #copscountpolicematter #policematter #policingmatters #publicsafety #communitysafety #accountability #criminaljustice #court #districtattorney #prosecutor #prosecutors #cop #cops #policemen #backtheblue #leadership #leadershipmatters #media #news International Association of Chiefs of Police Police Executive Research Forum Major Cities Chiefs Association FBI National Academy Associates, Inc. What a horrible idea! This has been tried before and has usually ended up in disaster and scandal. Just a few examples are: LAPD - Rampart Scandal, Miami PD - River Cops Scandal, Memphis PD - Tyre Nichols Scandal, and Washington DC Metro Police - Rush To Hire Scandal. Just another example of Cities and Law Enforcement Agencies not paying attention to history and making the same mistakes over and over again. When you hire unqualified and unsuited people for Law Enforcement positions you are doing a disservice to the profession, your agency, your officers, and your community. Never lower your hiring standards! “Hey friends, let’s talk about the misconceptions surrounding police officers and the importance of understanding the challenges they face in their line of duty. 🚓💬 In today’s world, it’s all too easy to fall prey to misconceptions and stereotypes about law enforcement. From assumptions about their job requirements to criticisms of their actions, police officers often find themselves at the center of intense scrutiny and debate. But here’s the thing: being a police officer is no easy task. It’s a demanding and often thankless job that requires courage, integrity, and a commitment to serving and protecting the community. Yet, despite their best efforts, officers are sometimes misunderstood or unfairly judged based on misconceptions rather than reality. That’s why it’s crucial for us to take a step back and try to understand the challenges that police officers face on a daily basis. From navigating complex legal situations to putting their lives on the line to keep us safe, officers encounter a myriad of obstacles that most of us can only imagine. By fostering empathy and open-mindedness, we can bridge the gap between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Instead of jumping to conclusions or perpetuating stereotypes, let’s take the time to listen, learn, and gain a deeper understanding of the realities of policing. So, let’s challenge ourselves to see beyond the misconceptions and support our police officers as they work tirelessly to uphold justice and protect our communities. Together, we can build trust, foster dialogue, and create a safer, more united society for all. 💙👮♂️ #SupportOurPolice #UnderstandingTheBadge #CommunityUnity #JamieSilversProfessionalDetailing”

🗣 While well intentioned the below information is not always a realistic option as explaining a criminal record to potential employers can be a re-traumatising experience, especially for individuals whose conviction histories are deeply rooted in past abuse and trauma (which is the case hearing first hand experiences from my peers tell me and is reinforced by research). 👨⚖️ You have to explain yourself to the courts - you do your time and or conditions and then you have to continually explain yourself for the rest of your life it seems where is this ongoing discrimination and judgement factored into sentencing. It grossly hinders the ability to be able to take on meaningful, skilled roles where you can contribute in a positive way to society. All of the people that I know with living experience have a multitude of knowledge and value that cannot be taught in text books and are kind and compassionate despite the horrific treatment and trauma that they have had to overcome. 🛑 This process often forces us to relive painful memories and confront stigma and judgment, which can hinder reintegration and emotional healing. Here are key points for employers and people working within Government departments like "Blue Card Services" to consider when discussing this issue: 👩🎓 We are PEOPLE not a charge on a piece of paper, we are not the sum of our offences. 💔 Having to recount past offences can trigger painful memories and emotions, leading to re-traumatisation. Are you having these conversations with us that are framed in a psychologically safe way and offering support during this process? The fear of being judged or rejected based on their past can exacerbate feelings of shame and worthlessness, which are often prevalent among trauma survivors. The stress and anxiety associated with disclosing a criminal record can impede our efforts to rebuild their lives and achieve stability. In my experience many employers may not fully understand the complex, trauma-related factors that contributed to the individual’s criminal behaviour, leading to unfair assessments and decisions - Decisions based on judgment and personal bias as opposed to selecting the best person for the role. I want to strongly highlight the importance of trauma-informed approaches in hiring practices and the need for employers to create supportive environments that facilitate rather than hinder rehabilitation and reintegration. Many employers claim to be fully inclusive when they are not, this needs to change. We need hiring practices that consider the deep-seated challenges faced by individuals with conviction histories. Have you been discriminated against when applying for a role due to your criminal record? If you feel safe and comfortable to do so please share your thoughts below (if not please send me a DM always happy to chat). Are you an employer that wants to know how you can make your employment process trauma informed and inclusive lets have a conversation.
We know having a stable, well-paying job is one of the leading factors for enabling a person to successfully reintegrate into their community after contact with the criminal justice system. Please support our Second Chance Jobs program. https://lnkd.in/gCuhRPX #reintegration #secondchances

Law enforcement agencies across the United States are grappling with staffing shortages following the pandemic and an increase in police hostility. Fort Hays State University Chairwoman of the Criminal Justice Department Tamara Lynn and Assistant Professor Morgan Steele completed research in 2023. The study occurred after a program graduate approached Lynn with concerns about how rural agencies struggle to recruit, hire and retain qualified officers. If the recruiting and retention crisis in law enforcement is not addressed, we unfortunately may see an increased number of smaller agencies disbanding due to the lack of personnel. Jurisdictions would then either look at either consolidated police services between multiple jurisdictions or the sheriff/state police taking over police services. Consolidated or contract police services are often cheaper and your jurisdiction might be policed by a larger agency. While the larger department might allow for more specialized Officers, the service they provide may not always be better, often it is less personalized to your communities concerns/cares, and the jurisdiction might end up with less people who actively patrol and police their jurisdiction. Since the founding of the Untied States, small town policing has been the American style of policing. As of 2002 this still holds true with approximately 86.9% of law enforcement agencies being 50 full time Officers and below (73.5% less than 25) and 85.2% of agencies serving a population under 25,000. While not always perfect, the American style of policing has been more innovative, creative, and impactful than nearly any other nations style of policing the last 120 years. If we want the tradition of small town/city policing to continue, Law Enforcement Leaders need to get serious about finding solutions to the #recruiting and #retention crisis in the profession. #police #lawenforcement #officer #policedepartment #policeofficer #policechief #sheriff #deputy #trooper #statepolice #policeauthority #officers #copscountpolicematter #policingmatters #leadership #hiring #standards International Association of Chiefs of Police Police Executive Research Forum Major Cities Chiefs Association National Police Chiefs' Council National Policing Institute TEEX - Institute for Law Enforcement and Protective Services FBI National Academy Associates, Inc. This is true for all professions, industries, organizations and sectors. Holding employees accountable leads to increased competence, innovation, commitment and satisfaction- it develops new leaders..,
Research Data Analyst at City of Rock Hill, SC- Police Department. Carolinas Crime Analysis Association board member.
Holding employees accountable is not the same as micromanaging them. I was talking to a veteran police leader about this and we both agreed, at some point in the past 5-10 years, these two separate things have been mixed up by employees in the Compstat, Problem-Oriented Policing and Stratified Policing worlds in law enforcement.

Cool idea. Would save a lot of time! Also, it might help with consistency in report writing, so the proper pieces of an occurrence and investigation are recorded. Read on ⬇️ #automation #AI #smarttech #technology #reports #authoring #timeconsuming
I am pleased to announce that I have joined Abel Police as a Law Enforcement/Solutions Consultant. I am proud to have joined a team that is helping bring enhanced technology at a reasonable price to law enforcement agencies and focusing on solutions to help free Officers from timely duties in order to get them back on the streets so they can best interact with and serve the community. Throughout the United States, law enforcement agencies staffing levels are down, calls for service are increasing, and organizations and their people are being stretched in numerous directions with limited resources. Through advanced technology, Abel Police can provide law enforcement agencies with a means of greatly reducing one of a Police Officers most timely duties, report writing. Anyone who has ever worked in law enforcement can tell you that for a 30 minutes police incident, such as a DUI arrest, there could be up to 4 hours of report writing. This amount of time greatly increases as the severity and complexity of the incident increases. This timely and important duty removes an Officer or multiple Officers from the street and reduces the department’s ability to respond to incidents in a timely fashion with sufficient personnel. Using advanced video interpretation and transcription and compatible to numerous records/report management systems, Abel Police has developed a solution that prepares police reports from an Officer’s body worn camera footage. The report generated is a detailed draft for an Officer to review and amend if needed. While technology is used to prepare the draft report, a human still has final say in the contents of the report and is still responsible to ensure that it captures all the correct and legal information necessary to properly document the incident. By using this advanced technology to assist Officers in preparing reports, the time to prepare reports would go from hours to minutes and the report would lose no detail, completeness, or essential information. Therefore returning the Officer to streets quicker so they can focus on protecting and serving their community. Please feel free to contact me at wfraass@code33consulting.com after October 21, 2024 if you are interested in learning more about Abel Police and/or client subscription options. #police #policedepartment #policechief #policeofficer #reportwriting #technology #sheriff #deputy #crimereports International Association of Chiefs of Police Police Executive Research Forum Major Cities Chiefs Association FBI National Academy Associates, Inc.
