Employee Spotlight - Between the Lines At Davey, our teams are synonymous with hard hats and hard work! But each of our team members have their own unique life story, career journey, and Davey tale. You may see our fleet out driving or our people out walking the utility lines…so join us each month to get to know our people working Between the Lines. Feature: Matthew Punch What’s your Davey + Life story? Looking back, I realize I had a wonderful childhood with great parents and grandparents. They instilled in me faith, a sense of community, and a love of the outdoors. They included me in their activities and supported me in mine. I was a baseball pitcher and probably would have never picked up a golf club if my catcher hadn’t been late…a lot…for warm-ups. He admitted to taking golf lessons. So, I decided to give golf a try and I was hooked. My first job was at a course in Charlotte at 14, picking up golf balls while learning how to hit draws and fades down rows of pine trees. Eventually I attended Methodist University. Our team raised two national championships in division 3 which was pretty awesome. After college, I worked in finance and pursued masters classes. When my parents developed health issues we partnered with a company to transform part of their farm in Hickory, North Carolina into a photovoltaic (solar) system. During the initial civil planning, I researched everything I could about the industry. I eventually left finance to work for that renewable company. One of the most unique factors of renewables is #innovation. To share an example: there is a brush that was designed to clean the Luxor Hotel & Casino. The brush has a rotating head that uses pressure to turn and clean the 39 degree slope with 4 gallons of water per minute, cleaning the hotel exterior. In 2018, our team thought there was a pathway to adapt that brush for cleaning solar panels. Working with the brush company we successfully rolled out a working proof of concept. After the roll-out, renewable modules are refurbished (every 3-5 years). Current mechanical brushes can clean 10x our initial numbers. That’s how quickly innovation happens in renewables. I became familiar with #Davey while bidding for renewable vegetation management contracts. The professionalism I saw in #DRG employees made an impression. One focus of our renewable group is to provide #mitigation services to companies to keep these systems working as productively and as long as their projects require, 25-30 years. The expertise available at Davey to collaborate on #renewable projects has made my first year here amazing. I still play golf as much as I can, when not chasing our six year old daughter who currently loves anything with wheels. My wonderful wife works at Charlotte Animal Referral and Emergency specializing in high risk cases. When she’s not saving animals, she’s bringing the “fur-babies” home. In my spare time I enjoy restoring classic Broncos (66-77), hunting, fishing, and gardening.

First and foremost, #greenenergy sources like wind, #solar, and hydropower are essential for reducing #greenhousegas emissions and protecting our #environment. By incorporating these technologies into our building designs, we can significantly minimize our environmental footprint and help preserve our planet’s ecosystems for generations to come. Transitioning from #fossilfuels to renewable energy in our buildings is also key to meeting global climate targets and stabilizing our planet’s temperature. Every green building project, no matter how big or small, contributes to this vital effort, and I’m proud to be part of this movement. Energy security is another important aspect. By diversifying our energy sources, we reduce dependence on imported fuels and enhance resilience against supply disruptions. This ensures that our communities remain powered and sustainable, even in the face of unexpected challenges. The economic benefits of green energy in building practices are undeniable. The green building sector is a major driver of #job creation and economic development. Investing in renewable technologies fosters innovation and supports local economies, which is crucial for the long-term prosperity of our communities. Let’s not forget the health benefits. Cleaner energy means cleaner air, leading to fewer health issues related to pollution. This is especially important in urban areas where buildings can significantly impact air quality, and I’m committed to promoting healthier living spaces through my projects. Sustainable development is another key reason why green energy is so important in green building. By integrating renewable resources into our designs, we can meet our energy needs without depleting natural resources, ensuring sustainability for future generations. It’s our responsibility to build a better future, and green energy is a vital part of that equation. I’m excited about the technological advancements that green energy is driving in the building industry. From energy-efficient technologies to smart grids and energy storage solutions, the innovations in this space are making our buildings more effective, accessible, and sustainable than ever before. Finally, embracing green energy in our building practices sets a positive example and positions us as pioneers in the international green tech market. By leading in this area, we can inspire others to follow suit and contribute to a more sustainable world. Let’s continue to embrace green energy and work together towards a cleaner, more sustainable future...
