There are a lot of things to look out for when you have a senior dog. Doesn’t matter how experienced you are. I’ve been caught out. This ‘ageing canine checklist’ (link in comments) was generated following a PetSavers-funded study at the University of Liverpool. The results showed that many owners find it difficult to know what ‘normal’ age-related changes are. Which means lost opportunity, as entering at least some transitions from health to disease might be avoided or at least mitigated. The researchers suggested it would be useful to develop standardized tools to assess senior dogs, including the most common signs to look out for and when to seek advice from a veterinary practice. Also to help guide discussions during consultations. This is the sort of research needed, leading to practical efforts to have impact on the healthcare of pets. Areas addressed in the checklist are: 🐕 Mobility 🐶 Dental health 🐕 Weight gain or loss 🐶 Behavioral changes 🐕 Confusion 🐶 Toileting 🐕 Drinking 🐶 ‘Lumps’ 🐕 Quality of life, challenges in care, and thinking about end of life. It would be interesting to know if this type of approach has an impact… …and we could use more data around interactions between comorbidities, including whether interventions affect more than one of them.
