A pioneering study by Dr. Yu Tang and Prof. Alexander Chubykin, published in Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology (2021), showcases a novel method to integrate new neurons in the brain's damaged areas to restore lost functions. Using NeuroD1-mediated gene therapy, they turned glial scars—often a recovery barrier—into functional neurons, showcasing the potential for visual function restoration after brain damage. GBA1 beyond the lysosome, Gaucher, and Parkinson's: discovery of brain non-lysosomal transcripts coded by the GBA1 gene The GBA1 gene, mutated in Gaucher disease and a risk factor for Parkinson's, proved difficult to study due to its highly similar pseudogene, GBAP1. Long-read RNA sequencing of human brains revealed significant differences in gene expression compared to traditional methods. This identified previously unknown transcripts from both genes, including protein-coding ones in the brain with functions beyond the known role of GBA1. Analyzing brain cell types further showed regional variations in these transcripts. These findings suggest new, non-lysosomal roles for both GBA1 and GBAP1, potentially impacting our understanding of GBA1's function in health and disease. An innocent jump into the water, a car accident or a fall from a ladder or stairs can be fatal. It is not uncommon for these accidents to fracture, shatter or dislocate vertebrae, injuring the spinal cord.
