According to Edward White of Financial Times, Tesla's market share in China has fallen to 6.5% as Chinese car buyers increasingly prefer hybrid models from local manufacturers. With over 100 new EV models launched this year by competitors, Tesla faces tough challenges, having not introduced a new vehicle in China since 2019. Meanwhile, Chinese brands like BYD are thriving, benefiting from subsidies and rising demand for plug-in hybrids. Elon Musk’s recent efforts to address regulatory concerns and promote self-driving technology may help, but competition remains intense in the rapidly evolving Chinese EV market.

Tesla's diminishing market share in China is due to local manufacturers, such as BYD and others, dominating the electric vehicle (EV) market with more advanced and diversified models. Tesla's share of the Chinese EV market has dropped from 9% to 6.5% in the first seven months of 2024, primarily due to its lack of new product launches in China since 2019. Meanwhile, Chinese companies rapidly expand their offerings, with over 100 new models expected this year alone. These include a significant rise in plug-in hybrids, which are becoming increasingly popular in lower-tier cities where charging infrastructure is still developing. Companies like BYD have introduced hybrids with a range of over 2,100 kilometers, significantly outpacing Tesla's current offerings. Analysts suggest that without new products or regulatory approval for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, Tesla may struggle to regain momentum in the world's largest car market. Tesla’s declining market share in China is a clear indication of the intense competition and rapid innovation happening within the Chinese EV market. Tesla’s reliance on older models without significant updates and its delayed introduction of new technologies, such as FSD, are hurting its competitive edge. The rise of hybrids, particularly in regions with limited charging infrastructure, shows that Chinese consumers are looking for practical solutions that Tesla currently does not offer. If Tesla does not adapt quickly, it risks losing further ground in a market critical to its global strategy. 🚗

Tesla is taking new steps to reign in costs while the company redirects its focus to #ai and #autonomy. New team lead for the 4680 #battery Bonne Eggleston has set a goal of lowering production cost of the cylindrical cells below that of #oemsuppliers #panasonic or #lges . Key to achieving that goal will be abandoning the dry coating process and outsourcing cathodes when needed. This is another significant departure from #tesla ‘s previous strategy of controlling costs by reinventing the #manufacturing process. The dry coating of the cathode eliminates the use of solvents and time spent drying, or curing the cathode layers prior to assembly. Tesla’s shift away from a focus on #electricvehicle assembly now includes the 4680 battery cell in addition to curtailing production advances with #gigapress technology and the Supercharging network being virtually eliminated. #automotiveindustry #ev #evs #automobilindustrie #batterymanufacturing #forecasting #autoforecastsolutions https://lnkd.in/ebtQYDM4

These new cells are expected to power several vehicles in Tesla’s lineup.” “Tesla first unveiled the 4680 battery during its Battery Day event in 2020. While the ramp-up of these next-generation cells has faced some delays, recent developments indicate significant progress.” “In July, reports from China suggested that Tesla was preparing to mass-produce the “complete” version of its 4680 cell, featuring both positive and negative electrodes produced using Tesla’s #drycathodeprocess .” https://lnkd.in/ee5gaaY2?
