I'm at a tech meetup. I overheard one of the co-hosts discussing her "women in tech" initiatives, for example hosting a hackathon with all women judges because so many hackathons are judged by all, or nearly all men. Another guy also overheard and butted in. He really challenged her hard on why she'd do this. Shouldn't she strive for 50/50? Isn't she being exclusionary? He went on to joke (I think) the event should be boycotted as anti-men. Ok, so, look— fellow fellas, don't be that guy. If you don't want to go, then don't. But crusading against women creating exposure for women, in a sea of events full of men, is not the way. (But it sure is easier to punch down, isn't it?) Don't make somebody's challenges the target of your joke... By the way: later, another guy challenged this same woman on whether she could even code, as a meetup host (after she'd introduced herself as a technical founder & engineer). In both cases she handled it with the grace of somebody who's very clearly heard it all before. But you can see the grimace behind the smile. #womenintech #dei #fightbias

It's disheartening to hear about the closure of Women Who Code. This organization has connected technologists and provided an unwavering source of support to women in the tech industry since 2011. The network of mentors, advocates, and career connections this community provided has been a true gift to my career. This news serves as an important reminder of the urgent need for greater action and support from both corporations and society to empower women in tech. Creating inclusive spaces where women are not only encouraged but given equal opportunities to succeed is important now more than ever. For women in tech and allies who would like to keep this movement alive, here are other organizations that share a vision of diversity, inclusion, and equity in tech- AnitaB.org, WomenTech Network, Women In Technology (WIT)

Got the best advice for attracting the type of people you want to talk to at the Women Tech Meetup in SF with Brex, Techstars, and Codi. During Q&A just raise your hand, even if you don't have a question. Start talking, pitch yourself or your company, and the question will come to you at the end (even if it's a bad one). The question itself doesn't matter, what matters is THE ENTIRE ROOM heard your message and the people interested in you or your company will come find you. I will not let another talk go by without raising my hand. Lesson learned. #sf #tech #womenintech #vc

I still don't have words for what a loss Women Who Code's closure will be for the tech community. WWC DC meetups are where I wrote my first few lines of code, downloaded Elasticsearch, made local friends in #dctech, and gave a lightning talk based on my book last year. I missed a WWC DC brunch last month but told myself I'd attend the next one. It still hasn't sunk in that I can't. Reposting this article and commentary to support the point that amidst record profits, offering fiscal support to keep WWC running would be a brilliant way to support the global women in tech community for generations. While I'm not sure if WWC's board attempted to find an industry sponsor before voting to close all chapters, this is a huge missed opportunity that will hurt the community WWC helped for so long. It also underscores the biggest point: If you're not fiscally investing in women who work in tech (bonuses, salary/cost of living increases, etc.), consider divesting from #IWD events.
Tech companies making record profits and not one of them stepped up with funding for a community which was making a difference? Apple, Microsoft, Stripe, Google, Facebook, IBM could fund communities like WWC for decades with their spare change. Bear this in mind the next time you see these companies posting about International Women's Day, supporting Women in Tech etc. Women Who Code: Influential tech network shuts down unexpectedly https://lnkd.in/eqiHK-7X
