It's rough to stand by while a loved one faces a life-threatening health crisis. Healthcare professionals are often laser-focus intensely on the patients, for good reason. But what about the friends and family surrounding them? These “co-survivors” experience immense trauma, fear, and grief during a medical emergency. The good news is, that small actions by clinicians can make a big difference. While your duty is to the patient, there is an opportunity to quickly offer help that extends beyond - to those deeply affected, though not afflicted. Supporting co-survivors has the potential to decrease their anxiety and trauma, foster a sense of support, and help them process the experience in a healthier way. Co-survivors bear witness to suffering in a way many in their lives cannot fathom. But with empathy and understanding, clinicians can lighten their load. With care that transcends the body alone to encompass the humanity in each life touched by illness. Learn more about 10 quick and impactful ways you can support co-survivors in our Sunday newsletter. https://lnkd.in/eJD__ePj
