What Plastic Packaging Industry Can Learn from Taylor Swift – Travis Kelce Love Story I can honestly say, I’ve never seen anything like the Travis Kelce - Taylor Swift relationship. A football star, already an A-lister, connects with a global icon, and suddenly every move they make, together or individually, every plane they are on gets tracked, and every family member within earshot becomes a pseudo-celebrity themselves, and on and on. What does this have to do with plastic and plastic packaging? To me, a lot. The plastic industry needs a good old-fashioned Love Story. Lately, it's so easy to hate on plastic, with so much misinformation (proven misinformation that was skewed on purpose) that many have lost their passion and will to stand up for an industry that needs it more than ever. Where would we be without plastic and plastic packaging? Look at the industries that rely on plastic: - Food: Lightweight and versatile packaging for food, preserving it, making food last longer so hungry people can consume it, reducing food waste, along with protecting products during transportation. - Medical: Have you ever imagined what medicine would be like without devices made from plastic? Its sterile and non-reactive properties help maintain hygiene and prevent contamination. - Construction: Pipes, insulation, and roofing, along with countless other products that rely on the strength and durability of plastic. - Automotive: Want to go back to steel bumpers and cast iron accessories? Plastic is used in car interiors and exteriors due to its lightweight, durability, and impact resistance. As a result, fuel efficiency has increased drastically. - Agricultural: Irrigation systems, greenhouse shields, and coverings help in weed control, moisture retention, and regulating soil temperature, which increase crop production. - Public Health and Safety: Fire retardant, flame retardant, bulletproof vests, and other health and safety products keep our first responders (who are protecting us) safe. While I know organizations such as PLASTICS (Plastics Industry Association) and programs like recyclingisreal.com are trying and fighting for the plastic industry, what we really need is a Love Story like Kelce/Swift, a feel-good, no-nonsense look at the industry that to this day doesn’t get the credit it is due or deserves. I say we start this Love Story now!
