Yesterday the DGS Women’s Network went on a walking graffiti tour in RiNo. The team learned the stories behind the best murals, graffiti, and street art in the city. We loved getting to know our soon-to-be neighborhood! #RiNo

Introducing this project on an Arrernte sacred site (Women’s Site) in the heart of Central Australia (Alice Springs) is a direct insult to the Mparntwe Traditional Custodians. While we acknowledge the perspectives of those who view tourism and commercial interests as beneficial, prioritising these over a site of profound spiritual significance, which has been sacred to the Arrernte people for thousands of years, is deeply troubling. Once again, we are witnessing the disregard of a culturally significant site in favour of external gains, undermining the preservation of an ancestral heritage that has shaped this land for millennia. This issue transcends economic interests; it is about safeguarding the heritage of the world’s oldest living culture for future generations. Is this a new movement by Indigenous interests that places commercial opportunities and gains above our cultural rights as the First Peoples of this nation? Traditional Custodian.

Celebrating the confluence of rivers through Art! I've created a mesmerizing artwork capturing the harmony and beauty of river junctions. Each colour reflects the unity and diversity found at the Sangam of rivers, symbolizing the coming together of cultures, ideas, and energies. Proud to share this artistic representation that embraces the essence of unity in diversity. #ArtisticHarmony #SangamOfRivers #UnityInDiversity"

I found the issue raised here very interesting. Most #Graffiti in its original physical form will likely turn out to be impermanent due to the public nature of the "canvas." But the work of someone like #Banksy will also most likely be preserved in a different form, like the #photograph seen here and in #videos, or #books, etc. Who gets to decide which #artists should be allowed to convert #public spaces into their #personal permanent canvases and which ones should not? Maybe the #ethics involved are about more than the #visual #theme communicated?
Should graffiti art be preserved? This month, stenciled artworks by #Banksy have been defaced or removed just hours after appearing in London. Part of his animal-themed series, some suspect that these murals raise questions about our treatment of wildlife and challenge the ethics of zoos. But the swift removal of these works highlights a larger debate: should street art like Banksy’s be preserved, or is impermanence an inherent aspect of graffiti?

Happy pub date to Rafael Schacter! "Monumental Graffiti" is a gorgeous new art book that we're proud to publish. What is graffiti—vandalism, ornament, art? What if, rather than any of those things, we thought of graffiti as a monument? How would that change our understanding of graffiti, and, in turn, our understanding of monument? In Monumental Graffiti, curator and anthropologist Rafael Schacter focuses on the material, communicative, and contextual aspects of these two forms of material culture to provide a timely perspective on public art, citizenship, and the city today. He applies monument as a lens to understand graffiti and graffiti as a lens to comprehend monument, challenging us to consider what the appropriate monument for our contemporary world could be. https://lnkd.in/eMZZ3dvh
