Today's CPAs are as diverse as the business world itself, offering expertise in forensic accounting, non-profit organizations, finance, and beyond focusing on so many different things. However, there seems to be a misconception that if you work with tax, that must be your sole focus. Does this irk anyone else? Are you an accountant or lawyer and want to give back but not sure where to start? Not too long ago, as a way of giving back, I became a company secretary for a not-for-profit organisation. I’d like to share once again, a little about my story. Not-for-profit governance in Australia is much like corporate governance, except that it doesn’t have all of the positions filled. For example, NFPs often don’t have a CFO or an HR department and so the CEO themselves are carrying not only the responsibility of the organisation, but also the weight. And they mostly do this alone. That’s where a company secretary executive can be of use, especially if you’re a lawyer or accountant. As an accountant or a lawyer, you have a strong skill set that not-for-profits need in order to manage the organisation effectively. And by you volunteering your time and experience, you can give quite a lot of value while simultaneously sharing the load with the CEO. So, if you’re looking at how to give back with business skills, then this is a role you should consider! Your familiarity and corporate governance structure will make you an asset to any not-for-profit. Feel free to message me if you have any questions, or leave a comment below. Right Source. As an accounting professional, you might think your skills are limited to crunching numbers and analyzing financial statements. But the truth is, your expertise can take you far beyond the traditional finance role. It's time to expand your horizons with non-profit board service. According to an article published in the Journal of Accountancy, serving on a non-profit board is a fantastic way to stretch your skillset and make a meaningful impact. It's not just about giving back (although that's pretty awesome too). Board service can help you develop leadership skills, strategic thinking, communication abilities, and the ability to tackle complex issues - all while supporting a cause you're passionate about. The benefits of board service go beyond personal growth. It can also open doors to new clients and collaborations. By expanding your network and showcasing your versatility, you'll prove that CPAs and accounting professionals are more than just number crunchers. So, are you ready to break free from the stereotypes and show the world what you're capable of? This is your chance to prove that your skills and expertise can make a difference in ways you never imagined. #NonprofitLeadership #AccountantsForChange #GivingBack

Just sat in on an excellent #cpe webinar by Wil Crawford & Neely D. Duncan with Forvis Mazars Group. Highly recommend this course that they routinely deliver via CPAacademy.org. While its title references "non-profits", accounting and internal audit teams at any type of organization will benefit. My favorite quote, of course: "Reconciliations are critical." #bestcpe #internalaudit #accountreconciliations #auditingcpe #shanascpepicks

💻 Nonprofit CFO 💰 turned Entrepreneur and Founder of @thecharitycfo and host of A Modern Nonprofit Podcast🎙️
There was a time where my firm The Charity CFO, LLC scrambled to get recruits. Like many other CPA firms, we were really dealing with a talent squeeze. I made it my mission in 2023 to be the firm that people want to work for. Making TCCFO so great that people came to us. I knew we were special but how do I get the word out? It's been a journey. As of today, not only are we fully recruited well into next year, we are still having accountants reach out and want to chat with us about future positions - before they even exist. 🎉 No, we aren't for everyone. And, that's totally ok. We are a little unapologetic about our culture and our expectations. For some, it's off putting. For others, it's a breath of fresh air. 🙌 I couldn't be more proud of the recruiting team and the brand we have built. If you are an accountant burnt out with the never ending busy season and frustrated with the dangling carrot promise of a promotion. 🙄 If you are suffering from corporate trauma filled with micro aggressions and unnecessary buracacy with no clear path on how to advance your career. If you considering jumping the accounting ship completely, send me a message. I built this firm intentionally. And different. That was on purpose. You can also check out our positions at www.thecharitycfo.com/jobs

A "good" director that's passive is as "bad" as one that's greedy or lazy. Of course, there are degrees and deeper aspects to this, but the point is that an indifferent director is not fulfilling his or her duties, and while the question of whether he or she is a "good", "bad" or "ugly" director merits a closer look, the role requires engagement, loyalty and vigilance, as well-stated in the article by Grant Thornton, regarding non-profit boards. The advice is equally applicable to for-profit boards, regardless of jurisdiction. These are basic and fundamental requirements, but sadly, I've seen many board members that simply "attend" without engaging, thereby accommodating or enabling all sorts of malfeisance by their inattention, indifference and inaction. "Bad" board members may not be the root cause of such malfeisance, but they're certainly a contributing factor and an ineffective control. This is why governance matters.
