I've worked either in or with the non-profit sector for most of my career - and it never ceases to amuse me how many industry Accountants I speak with who express interest in moving into the NFP world for a "slower pace." From my experience (and the experience of many Accountants in the sector), slower pace is not one of the reasons to move into the nonprofit world, for a few reasons: 1) Many smaller NFPs face pressure from their donors and the public to keep their Overhead and Administrative costs down, which often leads to Accounting staff needing to wear different hats such as taking on HR and Operations tasks as well. Since they don't have the budgets to invest or technology and infrastructure, staff often find themselves doing a lot of manual work. 2) Larger and better-funded non-profits operate very much like for-profit businesses. They are constantly implementing new technologies, working to improve/automate processes, and undertaking other special projects. Accounting and Finance staff play a key role in all of these initiatives. 3) The GAAP, tax reporting and donor reporting/regulatory requirements for non-profits is incredibly specialized. Staying on top of these requirements can be time-consuming. With that said, non-profit accountants who understand grants accounting, donor reporting, the ins-and-outs of 990 filings, etc, are constantly in demand. The non-profit world is a great place to work if you're passionate about your org's mission or if you are seeking to develop highly specialized accounting skills in an in-demand field!
