An iReach survey Irish Hospice Foundation commissioned in Decemeber 2023 gives an insight into Irish attitudes to death and grieving. The research (1,000 people) reveals that: 👉 1 in 2 people in Ireland struggle to know what to say to someone who's grieving. 👉 Only 3 in 10 of us feel that there are enough supports for those who are bereaved. 👉 3 in 4 of us believe family and friends are really important during the grieving process. National Grief Awareness Week aims to raise awareness of grief and the supports available, and provide an opportunity to discuss this typically uncomfortable subject. Content note: a 50-page booklet with practical advice for bereaved families. - - - - - The sudden, unexpected death of a baby or child is one of the most devastating things that can happen to a family. It contains information on who they’ll come into contact with and what investigations might need to take place. The loss of a baby or child can cause unimaginable grief. According to Child Bereavement UK, more than 6,000 babies and children were stillborn or died under 16 years of age in 2021. That’s thousands of families who have to try and come to terms with a terrible loss. In our latest blog, we look at coping with the loss of a child, strategies for navigating those early days, and how therapy can help if you are a bereaved parent. https://lnkd.in/epemVw-B #grief #bereavement

Grief Expert | Founder and CEO of Grief Connect® | 2023 WA Agrifutures Rural Women's Award Winner | Founder of The Grief Language Project® | Founder of Young and Over 55s Widowed Peer Support Groups | Speaker | MAICD
💢 The Grief Connect Young Widowed Support Group has now been launched to provide young widowed people across Australia (not only WA) with grief and bereavement support. 💢The group is a peer support group, members supporting members along their grief journey. The sharing and the power of the 'I get it, me too' that happens in the group, normalises the widowed experience. 💢After Nathan died in 2018, I was 38 and had 2 small children. My youngest was 2 years old. Connecting with other widowed people when I founded the group was life changing. It helped me realise that life wasn't over, like it felt it was. That there were others out there like me managing to take one day at a time and surviving through horrendous tragedy, and the connections gave me a sense hope to keep going. 💢If you know a young widowed person, please let them know that our group exists online, and also group members can arrange face to face catch ups in their region. 💢Sharing information and letting people know that support is out there is so important. Connections through peer support really make the difference. 💢The Grief Connect Over 55s Widowed Support Group is also available across Australia. 💢The Grief Connect website below holds the links to the free, Grief Connect Widowed Support Groups. Share amongst your networks. 💢Grief Connect. No one grieves alone. During this Bereaved Parents Awareness Month, we continue to acknowledge the challenges and heartache that our bereaved parents face daily after the unimaginable loss of their child(ren). We also want to raise awareness about the importance of empathy from those supporting the bereaved. Many bereaved parents have shared accounts of unhelpful comments from their support networks. Our society is not well-versed in grief, and these comments often come from a place of discomfort, awkwardness, or lack of knowledge. This RSA short is a light-hearted way to explain the difference between “Empathy” and "Sympathy”. Some important things to remember: • Cliches or silver linings are never helpful. • Don’t rush their grief. • Don’t tell them what they should feel or do. • Don’t try to fix them. If you’re a bereaved parent, share this with your support network as a gentle, light-hearted reminder. https://lnkd.in/gczXj8Df #ambernt #besideyouingrief #saytheirname #conversationsthatmatter #bereavedparentawarenessmonth #childlosssupport #neverforgotten #empathy

Today is National Trivia Day. Let’s test your knowledge. For some fun, we have a question for you to try and answer. Clue for correct answer: Grief support is available for the surviving family members up to a year after the patient’s death. Social workers are available to assist families in navigating services after the patient dies – such as connecting the family with bereavement resources or providing information about survivor benefits. 1. https://lnkd.in/gWMD7J3
