To all firms hiring Summer Associates and Interns Your summer employees are in a unique position to learn about their soon to be realized career and your firm. And, there is an additional way to provide them with a valuable benefit--and benefit your firm, too. We have developed a program focused directly on summer employees (regardless of what type of firm) that allows them to learn valuable elements of practice that complement what they learn from their jobs. They need to understand the marketplace, competition, differentiation and how to effectively message, develop a strategic plan, networking and more. It is covered once each week for an hour over a six-week period. While it enables them to gain essential knowledge and insight versus those who have not been exposed to these topics, it provides benefit to your firm as well. It demonstrates the firm's investment in them and can more easily connect you to those you ultimately want to retain. Today wraps up my 10-week internship at CampusESP in Operations. In the spirit of the office, I thought I’d reflect on the company goals as I offboard: 1. 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻. I’ve honestly been spoiled from working here. Watching a company truly care about its employees (and put money and time where its mouth is!) has raised my standards for what I should expect from management. I’ve watched leadership genuinely listen to and consult members of their team for big decisions, and everyone tries to make themselves approachable — my co-intern, Sammi Chai, and I even got to have breakfast with co-founder/CEO Dave Becker! I’ve learned a lot from everyone, but in particular wanted to highlight my managers Jobi John, Brianne Alvarez, and Dan Combs for the time and care they put into training me and Sammi, supporting us when we had questions, and serving as mentors for us. 2. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆. I’ve been thinking a lot about this as Sammi and I tackled a larger-scheme data project regarding our customers that culminated in a presentation to several teams/leadership and co-founder/CTO James Bright. It’s so easy to get lost in a sea of numbers, but I’ve been reminded constantly of two things. Firstly, any data project should be human-driven and inform human-efforts. Every data point is a person, and at every point in the process Sammi and I tied our work back to: What core problem are we trying to solve? The results need to be human efforts, and I'm excited to see our work drive personalized support to customers. Secondly, I've seen that there is no dollar amount that can be put on connections - this team cares deeply about its customers, and their customers care deeply in return. 3. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝘄𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲. Sammi and I both started our internships at the company summit this May in Philadelphia. What an incredible privilege it was to meet countless admin in higher ed who had taken time off of work to come talk passionately about CampusESP, network with other colleges, and think creatively about how to make the college experience better for students and parents. I attended talks and listened in on discussions about targeting First Gen/Low Income Families, International Families, Students of Color, and more. What emerged was many creative solutions to very human problems. I am so lucky to have gotten a taste of a growth company - while the work was hard and the deadlines were fast, the payoff felt incredible. So, tl;dr is, thank you for an amazing 10 weeks! I have learned so much and am excited to see this company grow.

You can work for 6 years and still have the bargaining power or market appeal of a 6 months intern. It's inevitable that time will pass in your career but not inevitable that you will evolve and grow in terms of skills, transformative experience and "portfolio juice." How many years isn't always equal to how much juice you have. From 2024 onwards, be deliberate about stacking up on juice, not only flipping the calendar.

✨ Who should you reach out to during your internship? ✨ Without a doubt, interns are the key to success in your future career – which is why TD organized an entire day of celebration for us, including sweet treats, games, and the chance to mingle! 🍬🤝 But why is connecting with other interns so important? While you should still try to reach out to as many managers, AVPs, and VPs as possible, your fellow interns are a resource much more precious than you'd imagine, for three main reasons: 1. They offer you the chance to learn more about TD's numerous teams/departments. ↪️ Talking to other interns allows you to truly understand what other teams do, including their daily work lives and yearly deliverables. And because information is gold in order to find your perfect fit, interns are the way to go. 2. They are more accessible, relatable, and you will have more relaxed conversations. ↪️ Reaching out to VPs and managers is always a stressful process, as some of us might feel embarrassed to appear too needy or pushy. Meeting with people your own age, who you share interests with, who are going through the same tribes and tribulations of interning, and who are eager to form new connections will lead you to have more relaxed and open conversations. You can discuss personal matters more openly and get advice on subjects you might not want to bring up directly with your management. Interns are also usually less busy than executives, meaning more chances to meet and connect! 3. Most importantly, you will grow into young professionals together. ↪️ No connections are as powerful as the ones we make while trying to find ourselves. Creating real friendships with your fellow interns while you all try to figure out your futures – which is stressful enough – will result in lasting connections. Be someone they can rely on, and you'll soon have access to the next generation of leaders and drivers of change in your community! #TDCampus #ProudToBeTD 💚
