Who else is tired of being treated like a second-class delegate? It’s 2024, and corporate events are still missing the mark on inclusivity. Why are those of us who don’t drink alcohol treated like an afterthought at events? We pay the same ticket price, but while others enjoy carefully selected wines and premium drinks, we’re handed a glass of cheap juice or lemonade. 🍋 Where’s the thoughtful alternative? The non-alcoholic wine, the artisan mocktails, the premium sparkling beverages? I don’t drink alcohol as a practicing Muslim, but this goes beyond personal choice—this is about inclusivity and respect. When corporate events fail to cater to non-drinkers, it’s not just disappointing, it’s exclusionary. 👉 Inclusivity means more than checking boxes. It’s about offering equal experiences for everyone in the room. If your event can serve a £100 bottle of wine, it can offer a decent non-alcoholic option too! 🥂 Let’s stop sidelining non-drinkers and start valuing everyone equally—whether they drink or not. 🍻 Is alcohol a necessary part of "work event" culture? 🍻 As a recently sober person, I found this piece in Sprudge particularly insightful. Alcohol has always been present at trade shows and work functions I've attended in the past. I never really took the time, however, to think about it until I started attending these same events sober. I had a great time socialising with people from other brands at various trade show after parties - from Lunch! To Expo West in Los Angeles and London Coffee Festival - but never stopped to think about how I'd be coping without the booze. It seemed a necessary part of networking - which is the whole point of these events. I completely understand the need to let loose after a long day of exhibiting at a trade show, but does this "fun" really need to be centred around alcohol? Are we not past that in today's society? The coffee industry, in particular, surprises me. It's normal for latte art showdowns and cuppings that have alcohol present. A required "pull" to boost attendance, even. Does this not contradict with the nature of specialty coffee itself? For an event based around savouring the particular tastes of various coffees, why would you let your taste buds be affected by booze? I'd love to see brands like Days & Lucky Saint | B Corp™ have more presence in the "work event" space. Every year, the number of coffee industry events held around the world only continues to grow. Although most take place in majority-consuming countries, more and more organisers have started to host trade shows and expos at origin in a bid to improve accessibility. The benefits of attending and exhibiting at industry events are indisputable. In addition to experiencing the latest trends and technologies firsthand, coffee professionals can network, build relationships, and potentially secure new customers. For a budding coffee shop owner or new roaster, taking part in events is vital to build brand visibility. But with more and more trade shows scattered across the globe, travel and logistical expenses quickly start to add up – and not everyone can afford the costs. Moreover, the pressure to turn up to as many events as possible is felt by many, with the fear of missing out becoming all too real. So has the cost of attending events made them too inaccessible for most coffee professionals? Or are there ways to still engage with trade shows that are more affordable? 5 things I learnt from leading my last event: 1. Understand the event objective and your audience This helps in finding an event set-up and product selection that suits your target group, and in turn maximizes your ROI. 2. Budget wisely Start with thinking of every source of outflow from the event, and then consider the costs to prioritize and the ones that can be mitigated. 3. Maintain good relationships with your suppliers and stakeholders The people behind the scenes are the ones that truly make or break the event. I’m so thankful for our team of reliable vendors and suppliers who see us through every activation! 4. Be incredibly organised Especially for logistic-heavy events, I find that keeping a checklist on everything moving in and out of the venue makes the event day significantly more efficient. 5. Expect things to go wrong And most of the time, they will. But nothing a calm mind and little creative problem solving can’t fix! I loved every step of organizing this cocktail at The Hour Glass. My favourite part of an event is always watching it unfold after months of planning, and this evening’s buzzy atmosphere brought on by eager watch aficionados was nothing short of rewarding.
