Award-Winning Architecture Student | Seeking Internship Opportunities in London, Paris, Dubai | Passionate About Sustainable Innovation
The 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐏𝐮𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 is an absolute standout project by Broadway Malyan, and it’s quickly become one of my favorite educational designs. Why? Because it strikes the perfect balance between modern functionality and timeless elegance—designed with a forward-thinking approach to learning environments. In today’s world, schools are becoming more than just places to study; they’re 𝐡𝐮𝐛𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡. This building embraces that by bringing together science, drama, and music under one roof—what a brilliant way to foster creativity and collaboration! 𝐒𝐨, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥? For starters, the design features 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 that can evolve as the school’s needs change. It’s a 2,000m² facility that includes nine cutting-edge science labs, a drama studio, a music department, and a 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦 where students can hone their spoken word performances. What really caught my eye is the building’s 𝐦𝐢𝐱 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, which ties beautifully into the school’s rich heritage, while still feeling totally modern and fresh. And then there’s the clever touch of 𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫-𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡-𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐬, 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠. Not only do they look amazing, but they also reduce heat and glare while letting in natural light, creating the perfect learning environment. Another highlight? The way the building interacts with its surroundings. 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘶𝘵𝘯𝘦𝘺 𝘏𝘪𝘭𝘭, 𝘴𝘰 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘵, 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘺𝘴 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘭, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘸𝘯 𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦, 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦. This thoughtful design creates a 𝐝𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐬—both practical and beautifully balanced. This isn’t just a school building; it’s a space that’s been 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞-𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐝 to inspire creativity, encourage collaboration, and elevate the learning experience for generations to come. Hats off to Ankit Kamboj, Phil Stone, Ed Baker, Ian Apsley and the team for bringing this visionary project to life. Absolutely inspiring!

The quest for perfectly decorated classrooms, fueled by social media, can overwhelm teachers, especially new ones. The focus on creating visually stunning spaces often detracts from meaningful connections with students and effective teaching. Hyper-decorated classrooms, while visually impressive, do little to enhance learning and require unsustainable levels of time, effort, and financial resources. Effective learning environments prioritize flexibility and functionality, using cohesive color palettes, maximizing natural light, and providing space for movement and adaptability. These classrooms support collaboration, creativity, and quiet reflection, meeting diverse student needs. By setting clear priorities, emphasizing instructional quality over aesthetic appeal, and providing professional development on research-based design, school leaders can reduce this pressure. New teachers should start by involving students in the design process and prioritizing learning over decoration. Overall, we should aim to shift from aesthetic perfection to student-centered design and encourage sharing these on social media to break the cycle of decoration perfection. #Education #ClassroomDesign #TeacherWellbeing #StudentCenteredLearning #EdTech Robert Dillon

#ThursdayThoughts 💡 What are learning space pilot programs, and what are the benefits of these experiences? "A learning spaces pilot experience tests spatial designs for classrooms. Successful programs generally are a semester in length and can involve numerous classrooms. The pilot aims to test furniture, flooring, lighting, color palettes, whiteboards, and technology, as well as understand teacher and student behaviors in the space, preferences for specific aspects of the designs, and how multiple designs impact the teaching and learning experience." Schools that engage in a pilot experience develop a deep understanding of what works and what doesn’t. Classroom redesign is expensive, so pilot programs help schools be wise stewards of their finances. Also, the decisions made about classroom design impact decades of use - it’s critical to get the right information to make the right decisions." Schools are not just collections of buildings; they are environments where learning thrives and students come together. Yet, when spaces within schools are disconnected, it creates a physical and emotional divide that can subtly affect how students experience education. In the 'before' image, the space between the intermediate school and the library is underutilized, with limited natural light and no real connection between the two buildings. This design left both students and teachers feeling isolated from the outdoor environment and each other. In the 'after' image, a simple yet effective change makes a world of difference. The new trellis and outdoor learning area bridge the gap, creating a vibrant space where students can interact, collaborate, and engage with nature. By incorporating large windows and open doors, natural light now fills the interior spaces, enhancing both the learning environment and the overall atmosphere. This transformation shows how even small design improvements can lead to a more connected, welcoming school experience that encourages collaboration, well-being, and deeper engagement with the surroundings.
