Another great video by Salvatore Mercogliano, Ph.D. discusses the current challenges to mariners in the Red Sea. This impacts nations like New Zealand that rely on these shipping lanes to transport our commodities to markets in the Middle East, Northern Africa, and Europe. Interestingly the video shows an onboard security detail engaging a "blowfish" radio-controlled USV with small arms to good effect. Personally, I would rather engage such a vessel with an M2 .50cal with API instead of small arms but they worked nevertheless. Providing cargo ships with temporarily deployable pedestal mounts and a few M2s might be cost-effective. It could give an element of anti-air for dealing with drones while providing a counter to surface attacks. .50cal ammo is cheap compared to some other measures and when paired with some EW measures could be an answer while providing the security detail with some added punch. Just my $0.02 worth. I hope the security detail got appropriate recognition and remuneration for the excellent marksmanship.

Is there a need for a 4th Protocol Additional to the #GenevaConventions that covers non-human combatants? There's an area of combat operations that the #rulesofwar have struggled to address sufficiently. While the likes of Jerome de Hemptinne among others have dedicated significant intellectual labor in bringing this discourse to the mainstream, there's still a long way to go in creating space for the recognition and protection of animals enlisted in combat and non-combat operations by parties to a conflict. This August marks the 74th anniversary of the GCs, and I think it's a great time to talk about animals in war-as direct participants in conflict operations -not just as part of the natural environment or as civilian objects. Learn about the unfulfilled promise of 40 acres and a mule after the Civil War. Discover the history, reparations, and Abraham Lincoln's role in this important part of American history. "40 acres and a mule" refers to a promise made during the Reconstruction era in the United States, following the Civil War. It originated from Special Field Orders No. 15, issued by Union General William Tecumseh Sherman in January 1865. The order aimed to redistribute land to newly freed African American families in the South, granting each family 40 acres of land and, in some cases, an army mule. However, this promise was largely unfulfilled, as President Andrew Johnson reversed Sherman's orders later that year, returning much of the land to its previous owners. The phrase has since become symbolic of the unfulfilled promises and the struggle for African American rights and reparations.
