Some thoughts on the transition from SWE to technical founder: As someone who learns best by doing, working on a greenfield opportunity has taught me more about engineering and management than working on incremental improvements in an established system or business. That being said, having solid foundations and learning best practices is crucial for making informed decisions. Cross-functional communication is critical: I primarily worked with other engineers or product managers as a software engineer. These days, I interface with operations, sales, and marketing as much as I do with product and engineering. It's important to figure out what's important to each function and communicate with each teammate at the right level of detail. YMMV as the team composition at every startup is different, depending on the stage and how technical the product is. You have to be willing to do more than just the technical stuff. Early-stage startups are notoriously under-resourced and Skye is no exception - at times it feels as if I moonlight as an engineer in addition to tackling customer success, hiring, strategy, and user interviews.
