For all young professionals: Saying “I am not interested” before hearing the details of a job opportunity is like refusing a free lottery ticket. You may not be interested, but what if that’s the winning ticket? You may not be interested, but it costs you nothing to hear the details. You just never know. Maybe this job opportunity you’re not interested in can change your life beyond your imagination. It could open up doors for you that you didn’t know existed. Always hear out the details. Always take the interview. If nothing else, you’ll learn something from the experience.

What was your first experience of getting a job? It's London, 1999. The only places you can find jobs are in the 30p Evening Standard on a Thursday, where there are perhaps 10 jobs (if you are lucky) that you can apply for. There's no email, so you have to call or post your CV, luckily your Nokia 3210 never runs out of charge, so you'll have battery for the call and be able to speak on the move, but will have to watch out that you don't run out of minutes. The only CV I have is one that school helped me make when I was trying to get work experience 2 years previous. Looking through the papers was lonely, I didn't know what I was looking for or doing - I had no one to ask. A job comes up for an office junior - salary £11000, I send my CV in, and get called back by ROC Recruitment. I visit their office in London. There was no job description, just a tiny ad in the paper . Carrying a trusty A-Z, I make it super early and visit the lady who was going to change the course of my life. I remember that she was kind and despite looking at a kid with just a couple of weeks work experience and a Saturday job in a shop. A few days later after my CV was sent over by fax to Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP - though it was just Manches back in those days- I was offered the job. I didn't get the first job I applied for of course, but I had a job within 4 weeks A kid, with no experience, no interview prep and a god awful CV. These days, the same kids and adults are able to apply for 100's of jobs in an afternoon, there is a million resources out there to make a better CV, be better prepared for interviews- yet we still have one thing that connects 1999 and now. The loneliness of job searching. The frustration of not knowing why we didn't get a call back. All those resources are overwhelming. The feelings back then are 10x because the world is moving faster and there are more opportunities than ever. I'm building a community for job seekers, yes there will be masterclasses to help you with particular things, but not banks of courses ( I mean, we all intend to....).
