What just happened to Fearless Fund is deeply concerning for DEIA practitioners and the mission of creating pathways for black people to access capital in their businesses and wealth for their families. This situation highlights the persistent efforts by some individuals—primarily those who are white and privileged—to hinder the progress of Black communities in accessing capital. For those committed to advancing DEIA, it is crucial to reconsider our strategies. Universities are already experiencing varied impacts, with some suffering setbacks while others may quietly celebrate the obstacles to progress. Similarly, several companies, many of which previously engaged in DEIA efforts only under public pressure, are now re-evaluating their investment in initiatives designed to diversify their workforces and leadership. The challenges ahead are significant. It is imperative to develop strategic approaches to continue addressing these critical issues and ensure that the progress toward equity and inclusion is not thwarted.

For Black, Indigenous and racialized folk active in community and place-based work, the Radical Relationalities Policy School might be for you. "This innovative program provides a radically different perspective on the study of policy through a decolonial lens, backed by research, and led by leading practitioners and scholars. The focus for the 2024 session is on building radical relationalities between Indigenous, Black, and racialized communities toward decolonial futures. Radical relationalities is a useful framework for cultivating and nurturing individual and collective relations with the view of shared decolonization and liberation. " https://lnkd.in/grB_BBSw

I am pleased that my paper has been accepted for the Development Studies Association conference in June 2024 at SOAS University of London for the Ebony Initiative panel, ‘Studying and doing development while black, which interrogates what it means to research, teach, study and implement initiatives.' This workshop will examine these issues from the perspective of scholars whose positionality is Black or those researching race and development. It will be a safe space to discuss experiences and strategies for navigating the development space while Black and/or centring race. Examples of key questions are: -How do Black researchers and development practitioners experience the development sector or discipline? -How does a commitment to social justice within development teaching, research and practice manifest when taking race seriously? -What is the relationship between reparations, restitution, and development? -Why isn't my professor Black? #DSA2024

We are looking forward to #DSA2024 where papers like this by Dr Alice Mpofu-Coles will ask important questions around social justice widely and in this specific example - what does it mean to research and teach global development while Black. Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) will host a mentoring event, “Your Future Today,” geared toward Black/African American males in grades 6-12. In keeping with the “Equity for All'' focus of the ACPS Strategic Plan, this event will be centered on recognizing and mentoring to the unique needs of Black male youth. Our data reveal that this group of students is overrepresented in disciplinary outcomes, detainments/arrests and academic disparities. By developing strong mentor relationships, some of the challenges that Black male youth face can be mitigated, and the strength of the communities, families and cultures can be drawn upon to bolster their potential for success. https://lnkd.in/eneftz7T
