Make sure you ask these important questions... ▪️ Is your school touring program educationally robust, meaningful, inspirational, linked to the curriculum you teach and custom designed to engender true learning outcomes and support classroom teaching? ▪️ Does it include subject related, real world, experiential learning activities that engage your students? Does it expose students to subject experts and potential future careers? ▪️ Does it offer travel/unique learning opportunities for your whole secondary school? ▪️ Are identified/unidentified risks being properly mitigated through careful education and planning. Is your tour program planned out over a 2 or 3 year cycle so that the school, teachers and parents all know what opportunities will be offered at each year level well in advance? ▪️ With ethically grey areas surrounding Service Learning tours, have you considered alternatives? ▪️ Does your school have tours that have been running for many years, which are not regularly reviewed for their educational merit, or risk, in line with current best practice? ▪️ Do you have a best-practice risk management system in place so you can confidently run safe tours and programs for your students?

🌟Spotlight time!🌟Today we're shining a light on one of our partners’ projects:  🔶 The Tribal Resiliency Grant project in the Aleut Community of St. Paul Island in Alaska 🔶 SEG works with the Aleut Community of St. Paul Island to evaluate several projects, including their Tribal Resiliency Grant project. The project, supported by the FY2021 U.S. Department of Education American Rescue Plan: American Indian Resilience in Education grant, just completed its second year. 🔶 As part of the project, six “community quilt” courses, designed with community support on topics important to the community, are being developed. These courses use project-based learning methods and utilize indigenous means of learning and knowledge acquisition (e.g., oral storytelling).    🔶 SEG serves as the evaluator for this project and is conducting a process evaluation to assess project implementation, a formative evaluation to understand the needs of stakeholders and provide feedback to project staff, and a summative evaluation to assess the impacts on participants. 🔶 As part of the formative evaluation, SEG reviews courses as they are developed to determine whether they are meeting standards for cultural responsiveness using the Culturally Responsive and Sustaining STEAM Curricula Scorecard (Peoples et al., 2021) and whether they are meeting best practices for online courses using the Quality Matters K–12 Rubric (Quality Matters, 2019).
