I'm frustrated. I keep coming across job openings seeking highly experienced writers at entry-level pay. Why are writers so undervalued? Thanks to long walks with my dog (h/t to Charlie), I now have a theory: 🏫 Everyone learns to write in school. ✏ Everyone writes every day, even if it's just emails and texts. Everyone has the skills (so they think). They just don't have the time. The internal dialogue heading into annual comp planning: "I could write that.  It's not hard.  Anyone can do it.  We don't need to pay a lot for these content roles." Why pay a lot of money for a job they could do themselves? If they only had the time. My theory crystallized with the rush to AI-generated content. AI eliminates the "time" issue. Inner dialogue heading into this year's annual comp meeting: "I could write that.  It's not hard.  AI can do it.  We don't need content roles." (Speaking of comp meetings, the low average pay for writers* is self-perpetuating. Decades of low salaries are baked into the comp data used to determine pay. 😠 ) How do we fix this? I'm starting to see a glimmer of hope. Lately, I've been coming across high-paying jobs with these titles or some variation: Storytelling Leader Director of Brand Narrative These titles reflect what most of us have been doing for years. However, "storytelling" and "narrative" better describe the value writers bring to an organization. Stories and narratives sound complex (because they are) and emotional (because they are). Storytellers have historically been considered essential, even revered, members of society. We need to start fighting for job titles that reflect our value. I mean, everyone loves a good story, right? But not everyone can write one. When hiring a writer, it’s tempting to rank experience as the highest qualification. But in my experience, that’s about the lowest requirement on the list. I can explain. All experience occurs in the past. But your value proposition is the future. Therefore, experience doesn’t help. Marketplaces change. Prospects’ businesses change. Economic cycles change. And God knows technologies change. Experience is OK, sure, but what really counts is your attunement to change. And attunement comes from experts. We writers live and die by the experts we consult. Instead of asking if writers have experience in your domain, ensure they have access to experts: —Product experts who can inform writers on the product —Senior executives who can inform writers on strategy —Sales reps who know what prospects are saying If you can arrange a conversation between your writers and a few customers, that’s the best. So, how do I rank a writer’s qualifications? 5. Domain experience: knowledge of the market 4. Empathy: ability to get inside the prospects’ heads and hearts 3. Strategic thinking: the left-brain counterpart to the right-brain creative execution 2. Curiosity: the ability to ask questions 1. Overly compliance cautious HR departments or straight-laced Legal/Finance leaders don't understand that "concise" and "essential" rule the day in a jobseeker's market. They are, rightly, worried about a no good, terrible, very bad and litigious hire. But their anxiety is actually a stumbling block for great candidates whose goal is for their work to exceed the job description, not to be limited by it. The best way to combat a lawsuit in the making is *not* to make your job posting a 10 page, airtight list of duties (yes, I've seen them). It's to have a culture-first hiring process that screens for the right kind of candidate.

Business Owners: I constantly see job postings that scream UNPROFESSIONAL. That’s a terrible reason to miss out on great talent. Does everyone in your org know what a good job post looks like? 👇 1. Clear and Specific Job Titles: Your job title is the first impression candidates have. Avoid jargon and keep it professional. Titles like "Senior Front End Developer" or "Junior Copywriter" are effective and straightforward. Avoid titles like “Ninja of Words.” 2. Concise Descriptions: Less is more! Aim for less than 300 words. Job seekers have many options, so a clear and succinct posting will capture their attention. 3. Highlight Essential Responsibilities: Focus on "must-have" duties and qualifications. Use bullet points to make it easy for candidates to scan and understand what you’re looking for. 4. Clearly Communicate Your Mission and Values: Candidates want meaningful work. Make sure to highlight your company’s culture and mission, as 79% (!!!) of job seekers consider these factors before applying. 5. Optimize for Searchability: Use relevant keywords and phrases to ensure your posting reaches the right candidates. If you need “MS-DOS 1.07” mastery, say so! If you don’t know what that means, congratulations on being younger than me! 6. Create Urgency: Encourage prompt applications by setting clear deadlines and highlighting exciting projects. 7. Consider Flexibility: If possible, offer remote work options or relocation packages. This can significantly boost your applicant flow. Your job posting is an *advertisement* for your company. Just this morning, I've seen about 3-4 LinkedIn posts of companies that are looking for "junior writers" to "step into" the role of content strategist/editorial manager. They promise excellent training, yet when I investigated further, the pay rate is closer to what you'd pay an entry level writer or an assistant of sorts. Friends. Friends! If you want someone to create your content strategy and manage a team of writers, you need an experienced strategist/writer for this role. And you need to pay them well. It floors me that I have to even type this right now. Your entire STRATEGY is in their hands. If they've never learned how to formulate a custom strategy, you're taking an excessive risk that could hurt you in the short term AND the long term. Plus, if you don't have a strategist or content manager on board at this moment, how can you possibly even train them to do this work. YOU NEED A STRATEGIST to train them how to create a strategy. If you can't pay well for someone to do this, then hire a content strategist in a short-term contract role to set the foundations for you....and then allow someone to follow their guidance. But stop wasting your budget and their time when you aren't prepared well enough to onboard and employ this position. That's it. I'm not looking for a job. Just my PSA to all the orgs out there looking for bottom dollar employees with high level skills. You can use all the AI tools in the world to save money, but you still need an experienced person at the top to manage all the tiny little pieces. Because, let me tell you, there are tons of tiny pieces that go into a solid strategy and a well-executed implementation of that strategy.
