Excited to be attending Restaurant Leadership Conference next Monday (well really Sunday) in Phoenix. This is my favorite conference of the year for a couple of reasons. I find the hallway connections are always great (the people you bump into at this conference are the widest array of concept's and scale). There is a nice mix of vendors as well and there is time to dig into items (whether that's with existing vendors or new potential vendors you can actually have time for a conversation). Informa Connect has clearly put a ton of thought into making sure there is enough time for these informal periods and the opening day activities are always fun (did a tequila tasting/cocktail making class last year and the year before some go kart racing). The drinks sessions, lunch periods etc. all facilitate and foster this seamless mixing. Finally I find that it's at a great time of the calendar right after Q1 has ended and we have been able to assess what's going right so far this year and what isn't. I find that other attendees are in a similar boat and thus the conversations are more vibrant and more focused. I do strongly suggest that operators of all sizes attend conferences like this one as the learning and development allows you to gain knowledge faster and from those further along the scaling journey than you are. Make time to work on your business rather than simply in the business as it will make you a far better operator. Not a sponsored post in anyway but just wanted to share my thoughts. The restaurant industry's reliance on technology is making the Chief Information Officer (CIO) role a training ground for future CEOs. Branded Hospitality Ventures good friend Sherif Mityas, former CIO of TGI Fridays turned CEO of BRIX Holdings, highlighted this trend at the Winsight, LLC FSTEC conference. He emphasized how the CIO role prepares individuals for CEO positions as technology becomes crucial in the industry. During a panel discussion titled "CEO vs. CIO/CTO," Mityas and Carissa De Santis, PMP®, Brix's Chief Technology Officer, discussed the changing collaboration dynamics between CEOs and tech leaders. They stressed that technology is now a strategic part of a brand's growth, moving away from being solely a cost center. Peer-2-Peer with a Beer ? I have had a few messages this week about the Peer-Peer Session at our 90 Day Planning Event on June 13th at W Edinburgh Hotel. It is always the most fun, inspirational, creative and awe-inspiring part of the day. So what is it that we do??? In groups of 4 or 5 business owners and leaders we each take 15 minutes to get the feedback, experiences and ideas on our biggest challenge and biggest opportunity. That’s 5 business leaders who will have faced a lot of the same challenges as you, focus all their experiences and creativity on your business. It’s a great short cut to success when a peer says, ‘I have done this before – I recommend this’ but sometimes it’s a perspective of someone completely out with your industry and geography who simply asks, ‘Why do you do that? Have you ever thought of this?’ Those fresh eye questions can change the game! It’s an amazing 2 hours to be part of. And of course, conversations about other businesses can also help yours and the conversations don’t stop when the session ends. Emails and WhatsApps continue after the event to ensure all best practice and great ideas are shared. As for the Beer ? It’s well earned on the rooftop bar at the end of the day. Sunday Stories: How we bought 45 venues in less than 45 weeks: - in stealth, for the first 20 weeks - having to recruit 45 GMs & senior team - and put business systems in place On Sundays, I'm sharing true stories about my 40+ years, some funny, some serious. ASX100 Lion (Lion Nathan at the time) wanted to ↗️ beer market share in Victoria. This was late 99 / early 2000. CUB (Fosters) had 90% of Victoria. They wanted to put their beers in Melbourne & regional venues. I was headhunted from London to Melbourne to set it up from scratch. I was the first employee and within 8 months we had 1200. I had to recruit a team of area managers and a senior exec team. Most of the businesses were using cardboard boxes as 'tills' so I got A$2.5m to put PoS and cameras above. (Pre GST) Our revenue went from zero to about A$250m in today's money. Then spent A$10m on 38 refurbs, a few big fit-outs and many small ones to bring the venues up to scratch. Lots of stories to tell about this 2-year period of my career. More to come on future Sunday's It was the highest rate of change environment I have ever been in. Our Women in Restaurant Leadership Summit in Nashville, as many of you know, actually began with a panel idea at last year's QSR Evolution Conference and NextGen Resturant Summit. That panel became way too crowded, so we turned it into a roundtable, which also filled up. So we flipped to a "Cocktail Networking Reception" intended for about 50 people. That ended up with 155 as the hotel clamped it down. What was cool was, at one point, a third of our entire conference registration were women thanks to this one-hour event. And once it began, people started telling me how it could be better (looking at your Mary Jane Riva, CFE!) And that's what spurred the separate event we just hosted recently. All said, we're not just bringing the WiRL Cocktail Reception back to Atlanta in September, we're also launching two massive educational sessions ahead of it, one on the QSR side and one for FSR, alongside a ton of other engaging content intended to further deepen this community. WiRL will be well represented, to put it lightly. To clarify, this is part of the larger agendas for QSR Evolution and the NextGen Summit. The separate Nashville WiRL event will be back in February.
