Unfinished Business: Racism and Sexism on the Ballot 16 years ago, I stood in Grant Park, witnessing the first Black president of the United States give his victory speech. That night, I cycled back to my apartment, broke down, and sobbed for hours, releasing months of pent-up emotions—worry and fear, but also a deep gratitude. Barack Obama's election felt like justice finally tipping in the right direction. "And where we are met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can.” - Barack Obama. Today, we have the chance to make history again. A Black woman can win the presidency if we mobilize and vote. Many doubted America was ready for a Black president, and the stakes are even higher now. America’s longstanding burdens of racism and sexism weigh heavily on us, particularly as the rights and inclusion of women and people of colour face significant threats across the country. Remember: change can drive progress, especially when progress is stalled. I stand with Kamala Harris. I encourage the Black and Brown Americans in my network to remember that we can, and that we did before. Stay hopeful, and activate your communities to leverage our shared privilege as citizens to exercise our vote. Let's make history again. Yes, we can. #KamalaHarris #Vote2024 #YesWeCan

Yes! We have to choose to believe that it is possible, and also do the work to make it happen! #Harris2024

I was 8 when Obama was elected and I remember the moment I saw him standing on that stage with his daughters and his wife that looked like me. It was an incredible moment for me, as a black girl that grew up in Switzerland where representation at that time wasnt really a thing. We need firsts! We need people who pave the way and they need people and a community who supports them especially when they face the incredible scrutiny, racism and sexism that comes with being the first. Thats us, we need to be that community if for nothing else than for the fact that they are paving the way for everyone else.

I am totally 🥥 🥥 🥥 pilled and definitely feeling 2008 vibes. I caucused for Obama at the EMEA Democrats Abroad caucus in Brussels. What a peak experience. So many things I loved: Being in an amazing city with fellow Americans of all stripes, all of us living third culture lives, participating in real-time democracy and history [side note: I CAN'T believe that was 16 years ago!]. After his election was one of the few times in all my years in Germany that I wished I was living back home. Too superstitious to buy a white suit yet, but excited and mobilizing with friends!
