Venture capital investment experienced a significant contraction in 2023, as global business underwent a period of turbulence. According to PitchBook data, the agri-tech sector followed this pattern, with investments decreasing from $11.8 billion in 2022 to $7.1 billion last year, a reduction of 40%. Indoor farming was one area where this fall was particularly severe, falling from $2 billion to under $500 million. The early signs show that the market contraction has sown the seeds for robust M&A activity in 2024. Continue Reading: https://lnkd.in/g8kkwqYb #Agribusiness #DigitalFarming #Agriculture #AgTech

WEENAT: FRENCH AGTECH STARTUP SECURES €8.5 MILLION FUNDING TO COMBAT WATER SCARCITY Weenat, a French agtech specialising in mobile and connected solutions for farmers, recently secured €8.5 million in investment from prominent entities like ECBF, a European Circular Bioeconomy Fund (ECBF) impact fund based in Germany, Pymwymic, a Dutch impact investor, LIBERSET, a transatlantic investment company, and IDIA Capital Investissement, a Series B investor reaffirming its confidence in Weenat. These investments are dedicated to fostering a more sustainable agriculture system in response to the undeniable reality of climate change, which presents significant challenges in water scarcity and management for the coming decades. Agriculture currently accounts for 70% of global freshwater withdrawals, with more than half of this water inefficiently used due to the absence of suitable tools. Weenat is committed to supporting farmers in addressing the challenges posed by water scarcity, with innovation central to its strategy. The company strengthened its research and development capabilities by acquiring Weather Measures, a data-driven Agtech startup, in 2021. This acquisition underscores Weenat’s dedication to delivering advanced technologies to the farming community, whether through internal innovation or external partnerships and acquisitions. Jérôme Le Roy, founder of Weenat, said: “We are thrilled to welcome new investors who share our commitment to make the most meaningful impact. With these new financial means, we will continue to innovate, equipping the farming community with data-driven tools essential for more resilient agriculture which currently faces so many challenges.” To read the complete article click on this link below 👇 https://lnkd.in/eWievMWv #agritech #agritechnology

📣 Agri-tech startup, Seabex, closes seed funding round, led by Water Unite Impact 💧 We are thrilled to welcome Seabex to our portfolio as the latest investee in the Water Unite Impact Investment Vehicle. Water security is a critical issue in the agricultural industry. Seabex addresses this challenge by enabling farmers to reduce water consumption, thereby cutting costs and minimising environmental impact. This, in turn, enhances local water security and mitigates the agricultural sector’s impact on local watersheds as well as reducing water consumption overall. At Wellers Impact and through Water Unite Impact, we support innovative, scalable, and cost-effective solutions that comprehensively address global water challenges, extending beyond traditional WASH investments. Seabex aligns with Pillar 5 (water preservation) of our Water+ investment thesis, creating impactful solutions that increase water efficiency through their cutting-edge AI and sensorless technology. Global agriculture consumes nearly 70% of the world's annual water supply, with approximately 40% lost to inefficiencies and poor management. Seabex’s scalable and cost-effective platform empowers farmers to reduce water usage while increasing crop yields. We are proud to support Seabex in their mission to revolutionise agriculture and contribute to sustainable water management. Startups dialed back hiring in 2023, more biodiesel plants may close in 2024 and Southwest Airlines invests in SAF. USDA restricts the use of ‘Product of USA’ label, food inflation dips lower and a laser to measure cow burps. Origination equals control. When you are the originator of all the inputs of your product/technology, you exhibit control on the market. Food and agriculture value chains make this hard to do but when done, it is an effective lever for #agtech. I’ll outline how it’s done and some examples in this week’s newsletter. #agtechfriday #startups #agriculture #originator #origination #agtwitter #innovation #origin https://lnkd.in/gWkjwxJd
