Thanks to the tireless work of our engineers and our operations team, we have deployed our Gen5 machine to process waste corn stover from the harvest in the Texas panhandle. Each day we are pushing throuput closer to the rated capacity while integrating biochar spreading and incorporation solutions to meet farmers needs. In the coming weeks, two additional machines will join this one to form the first operational fleet of mobile, on-the-fly biochar production machines in the world. By eliminating biomass and biochar transport, we are able to produce biochar at a cost that makes sense to broad acre agriculture AND large scale carbon removal buyers. #biochar #carbonremoval #cdr #regenerativeag #soilhealth

Keeping carbon where it matters most
About us
We are on a mission to develop and scale groundbreaking technologies that regenerate our soils and sequester atmospheric carbon by the gigaton for the betterment of people and planet. Our technology leverages natural thermal processes and precision automation to convert crop residues into biochar, a stable form of carbon that builds soil health and stays out of the atmosphere permanently. By utilizing a mobile, in-field solution to convert field waste to biochar, we keep carbon where it matters most while dramatically cutting costs from the typical approach of shipping massive amounts of bulk material to and from centralized facilities.

Another huge honor. Thank you to the The Wilkes Center for Climate Science & Policy at the University of Utah for supporting our work! https://lnkd.in/gWhexjRt
We are excited to announce the winner of the $500,000 Wilkes Climate Launch Prize is Applied Carbon! Applied Carbon, formerly known as Climate Robotics, has developed a mobile, in-field solution that picks up crop residue left after harvesting and converts it into biochar in a single pass. The resulting biochar product is deposited back onto the field, simultaneously increasing soil health, improving agronomic productivity, reducing lime and fertilizer requirements, and providing a durable carbon removal and storage solution. The 2024 Wilkes Climate Launch Prize is one of the largest university-affiliate climate awards in the world and is geared to spur innovation and breakthroughs from organizations at all stages, both for-profits and nonprofits—anywhere in the world—to help fund and accelerate solutions to climate change. Applied Carbon was selected from among seven finalists that presented their ideas at the Wilkes Climate Summit in May. The finalists were evaluated by a team of expert judges for scalable impact, feasibility and potential for co-benefits for communities, economies or ecosystems. https://lnkd.in/gWhexjRt

To reach meaningful scale for soil improvement and carbon removal, biochar production needs to make use of distributed agricultural biomass, like an opportunistic grazer on the open range. Cotton Gin Byproducts are one such material that we are hungry to process. Corn-Cotton rotations are popular here in the south and we can satisfy the hunger of our mobile fleet by making use of in-field corn stover (when available) and move on to cotton gins when done to keep our machines fed and our farmers happy. A recent article by Farm Progress highlighted some of our work on developing this opportunity. As Greg Holt, the research leader at the USDA-ARS Cotton Production and Processing Research Unit in Lubbock, Texas shared: “Applied Carbon is testing portable units to transport to cotton gin yards. A gin would not have to invest in a pyrolysis unit, which is not a small endeavor … they’d access it though something like a short term lease … The idea that something could pull on site, you don't own it, you're paying a fee for use, and growers benefit from the byproduct is compelling. Cotton growers get an added benefit from their own product.” For more information, please reach out to Tracey, our head of Agriculture. https://lnkd.in/gNrhReez #biochar #carbonremoval #cotton #cottonginbyproduct #soilhealth #climatetech

We are happy to be working with Autodesk Foundation to bring our design concepts into physical reality. Special thanks to Ryan M. Macpherson for your continued support on our mission to restore balance in our atmosphere and soils. #biochar #cdr #agtech #climatetech #soilhealth
Applied Carbon, part of our Energy & Materials portfolio, is scaling the production and use of biochar using cutting-edge robotics and automation. The startup's tractor-based pyrolysis system turns agricultural waste into biochar—a nutrient-rich substance that not only sinks carbon for thousands of years but also enhances soil health—transforming fields into carbon sequestration powerhouses without leaving the farm. 🚜 🌱 Applied Carbon's technology offers an affordable, scalable #CarbonRemoval solution and boosts agricultural productivity. The potential? Removing over one gigaton of carbon emissions annually in the US alone! 🌎 #ClimateTech “To preserve people and planet, the world needs well-designed physical infrastructure that has never been built before.” – Dr. Morgan Williams, Co-Founder & COO, Applied Carbon Learn more about our investment in Applied Carbon ⤵️

To make biochar at sustained billion ton per year scale, you have to use ag waste as a feedstock. To use ag waste as a feedstock, you have to use a pyrolyzer that operates like a piece of farm equipment. Up to one-third of excess CO2 that has accumulated in the atmosphere since the start of human civilization has come from humans disturbing soil through agriculture. To reach our net-zero objectives, we need to put that carbon back where it belongs. Biochar is unique in its potential to do so at a permanence and price point that are conducive to mass-scale adoption of carbon dioxide removal solutions, while also leaving farmers and consumers better off thanks to better soil health and nutrition. Thanks to its technology and business model, Applied Carbon is the only company that turns that potential into reality. Huge congratulations to Jason Aramburu, Morgan Williams and the Applied Carbon team on this announcement, we are proud to partner with you.
