Earth is a unique planet supporting many different forms of beautiful life in a very special location in this endless universe, and there is no Plan(et) B within our reach. We must allocate more resources to tackle the global challenges of our century, such as global warming and hunger. At Debye, we have embarked on a mission to enable farmers to transition from ammonia-based fertilisers to nitrate-based ones, aiming to reduce carbon emissions, soil degradation, and air pollution due to ammonia production, transportation and use. 🔥 Using the power of methane-eating microbes to reduce methane emissions? Is it possible? Yes, it is! Methane-eating microbes utilize a process that allows them to consume methane as their primary source of energy and carbon. These microbes are found in environments where methane concentrations are naturally high, such as wetlands, or where methane is a significant byproduct, like agricultural sites and landfills. The microbes oxidize methane into carbon dioxide, which, while still a greenhouse gas, is significantly less potent than methane in terms of global warming potential. The potential of this biotechnology could be a game-changer for industries like agriculture and energy, where methane release is substantial. By integrating these microbes into emission-heavy processes, we can make a significant impact on our planet's health. This is a brilliant example of how innovative science is leading the way in sustainable practices. #Sustainability #ClimateAction #Innovation #EnvironmentalScience #GreenTech

Another week, another groundbreaking discovery in wastewater treatment! This one comes from researchers at the University of South Wales, who have developed a method called OXYHYWATER. Typically, wastewater pollutants are tackled through a process called aeration, where air helps bacteria break down harmful germs. OXYHYWATER uses pure oxygen instead of regular air, which massively speeds up the process. The result is a dramatic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, especially nitrous oxide, which is a major contributor to global warming. The environmental perks don’t end there. This method produces less waste, leading to a more efficient and cost-effective process. Even better, the used oxygen is sourced from eco-friendly hydrogen fuel production, doubling the sustainability benefits. The research hasn't been confined to the lab—a pilot showed that the technology works in the real world, too. Coming soon to a wastewater treatment plant near you? Let's hope so! #WastewaterTreatment #GreenTech #WastewaterEngineering

Today, on the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, we are reminded that the air we breathe is essential to survival—yet 99% of the world's population is exposed to polluted air. Air pollution threatens not only human health but our planet as a whole. It accelerates climate change, disrupts ecosystems, and threatens agricultural productivity. Reports highlight the urgency of addressing methane emissions, which account for around 30% of global warming since the Industrial Revolution. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas and contributes to ground-level ozone pollution, causing nearly 1 million premature deaths annually and significant losses in crop yields. These findings underscore the need for immediate action to reduce methane emissions from fossil fuels, agriculture, and waste. At Bioeutectics🌱, we believe that the future lies in sustainable innovation, where harmful emissions are minimized at their source. Inspired by nature, we develop natural solvents that reduce the reliance on petrochemicals, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment. By focusing on cleaner technologies, we can make a transformative impact—not just for today's generation but for the future of our planet 💚🌎 #CleanAirForAll #Sustainability #Bioeutectics #GreenTech #ClimateAction

Did you know that black carbon (soot) is 1,500 times more powerful than CO2 in heating the planet? Ecosystem Informatics Inc. is happy to announce that we now offer black carbon indicators to assist with black carbon monitoring and management. Black carbon is one of the most potent climate pollutants, responsible for driving rapid global warming. Many industries emit black carbon, including transportation, manufacturing, residential heating and cooking, agricultural burning, cement production, steel and iron production, oil and gas refineries, and more. Reducing black carbon and other short-lived climate pollutants like methane and ground-level ozone can cut the rate of global warming and significantly improve air quality, saving millions of lives from harmful pollution. ESI’s technology is at the forefront of providing the data necessary to combat these super pollutants, enabling proactive decision making and continuous monitoring. While we need immediate and deep emissions reductions, carbon dioxide removal (CDR) plays a crucial role in all modeled scenarios that limit global warming to 2°C or lower by 2100. So scaling up CDR is essential. But nature isn’t the easiest business to monetize. That’s why solutions with benefits beyond carbon sequestration are so appealing. Enhanced rock weathering is one of those solutions and Benjamin Todd at UNDO gave a great overview of it at last week’s Working in Sustainable Technology meetup. Silicate rocks (comprising silicon and oxygen) make up about 95% of the earth's surface. Over the course of thousands of years, wind and water break down rocks in a process called weathering, which captures CO₂. Enhanced weathering accelerates this process by crushing the rocks into smaller pieces, increasing the reactive surface area. According to the IPCC, this method can store CO₂ for over 10,000 years (more than natural solutions) and costs $50-$200 per ton (cheaper than direct air capture). How it Works 1️⃣ Crushed silicate rock is spread on agricultural land. 2️⃣ Rainwater combines with CO2 as it falls. 3️⃣ The rain reacts with the rock, mineralizing the CO2 and capturing it as solid bicarbonate. 4️⃣ Bicarbonate ions wash out of the soil through runoff, rivers, and streams and ultimately into the ocean, where they’re permanently stored. Co-Benefits Beyond Carbon Capture 1️⃣ Improved Food and Soil Security: As the rock weathers, nutrients are released into the soil that could potentially improve soil health and crop yield, reducing the need for harmful fertilizers. 2️⃣ Reduced Ocean Acidification: Enhanced rock weathering can help reverse the past impacts of pollution and industrial agriculture on marine life in both in rivers and the ocean. Challenges 1️⃣ Scalability: The rate at which ERW can remove CO₂ from the atmosphere depends on soil conditions, and those can vary widely even over small areas of land. 2️⃣ Health Impact: Pulverized rock can contain heavy metals, posing potential health risks. 3️⃣ Monitoring, Reporting and Verification: Current tools and methodologies for MRV are lacking. Bottom line: While more research is needed to fully understand its environmental impact and carbon removal potential, enhanced rock weathering shows promise as one option in the larger CDR removal toolkit. #ClimateTech #CarbonRemoval #EnhancedRockWeathering

What's worse than ocean plastics? 🥤 🌊 CORAL BLEACHING. 😰 Because while plastics are an abominable beast, coral bleaching is a knife-edge; a tipping point beyond which there is no return. In a world rapdily approaching prolongued 1.5º warming, once corals are gone, they're gone. Along with 25% of marine species. Along with coastal communities that depend on them for food, protection, and livelihoods. The UN Environment Programme has valued global corals as contributors of $70Billion to the global economy this decade. That's a LOT to lose. Help us prevent the loss of other critical ecosystems before it's too late. https://lnkd.in/esHmHxDV #Coral #Eyewear #Optics #NetZero #NetZeroOptics #NetZeroEyecare #ClimateCrisis #Sustainability
