Emory Healthcare CEO, Joon S Lee MD, shares his strategy for creating a data-driven culture in his article for EpicShare. “Too often in health care, we use data to look only in the rearview mirror. We’re great at looking back at what we’ve done but not at using our data to look down the road to figure out where to go next. We need to start using our data to manage resources more effectively so that we can extend our services to more patients and better meet the needs of our community," says Lee. Lee went on to explain how Chief Data and AI Officer Joe Depa and his team led an effort to both validate Emory Healthcare data to make sure the inputs were reliable and provide onsite hands-on training during “data blitzes,” to drive adoption of Epic software tools. My key takeaways include: 👉 Leaders are caught between increasing executive pressure and team expectations. 👉 Leadership now includes a broader set of responsibilities including providing emotional support. 👉 We need to safeguard the wellbeing of our leaders amidst these growing demands. Over the many years that I have been championing DE&I, the most common question that I get asked and I ask of others is “what initiatives are you deploying at your company and are they working?” Rarely do I give or get an answer that is definitive. There are a number of reasons for this but I believe one of the main reasons is that it can be challenging to gather the data needed to understand whether something is working of not. DE&I initiatives can often be a journey of hit and miss and progress can be slower as a result. That is why I was absolutely fascinated when I first met Paola Cecchi-Dimeglio, a behavioural and data scientist, lawyer and Harvard faculty member. Paola combines her qualifications to gather data and generate insights into which initiatives work best in an organisation. I had so many a-ha moments in my first meeting with her when looking back at why certain DE&I initiatives succeeded and others failed. Paola has now gathered all her experience and written Diversity Dividend, a book that I wish was around when I first started on my DE&I journey as she has expertly married data science, including AI and Big Data, with human insights and technology, to tackle the varied outcomes and challenges organisations encounter on their DE&I mission. The brilliance of Diversity Dividend lies in the way Paola takes the reader step by step through an organisation’s people process from attracting, recruiting, onboarding, through to training, developing and optimizing diverse talent and presents actionable solutions and strategies for each stage, supported by real-world cases and data-driven insights. The book deftly blends anecdotal evidence with scientifically robust solutions and data insights, providing strategic nudges towards desired outcomes. This synthesis ensures that leaders not only understand the "what" and "why" of talent optimization but are also equipped to successfully master the "how." Diversity Dividend is a groundbreaking book that serves as both a roadmap and a toolkit, helping turn lofty aspirations into practical, measurable results. That is why I am excited to be speaking to Paola about the book and other DE&I matters at a special breakfast session in London for all GCD&I signatories on 2nd July. Key takeaways: 1. Seek out companies with high GenAI ambition, but make sure you understand the tangible barriers to adoption and the capabilities required to overcome them. 2. Start with GenAI for cost savings, then progress to revenue-centric initiatives, including new revenue streams and strengthened customer engagement. 3.
