Sorry for swearing, but we really need to talk about this. According to the latest Civility Index from SHRM, 40% of the incivility you encounter, each day, happens at work. 40%! Not at the DMV. Not at your kids soccer game. At. Work. And, I know every person reading this has been the victim of incivility. And, perhaps also, you know, may have rolled their eyes during a meeting. And at this point, with the amount of uncivil infractions happening at work - we think we all need to check ourselves...before we wreck ourselves (had to do it. apologies, was wide open). On December 8, Jill Cory hosted the The Emotional Intelligence Training Co. (EITC) webinar titled: EI and Gender Based Violence. I was one of several coaches in attendance, interested in learning how to be more effective with coaching conversations in a skillful and sensitive way that supports a client who has experienced gender-based abuse. Given that the research suggests one-in-three women in North America experience gender-based abuse, it occurs across all social classes; all races; all ages, all workplaces. It could be anyone's experience. I remember the exact moment in the webinar where Jill shared an excerpt from the research where 94.7% of the population of abuse survivors surveyed felt their safety was not taken seriously by trained counsellors who did not recognize abuse. Coaching is built on a platform that presumes people are creative, resourceful, and whole. This foundational premise implies that we are all free to make optimal choices that serve our highest interest, which simply is not accurate. An unsafe choice is not a true choice. This is why I pay attention in a room where Jill, a recognized SME, is teaching on this topic. I'm afraid I'm going to miss a signal. So, I'm learning how to be more equipped.
