UKCAA to shape hydrogen-powered aviation’s regulatory path with key players. By Charlie Currie The UK Civil Aviation Authority (UKCAA) has selected three hydrogen aviation players to increase industry and regulatory readiness for the introduction of the energy carrier. Cranfield Aerospace Solutions (CAeS), Exeter Airport Consortium and ZeroAvia have been selected as part of the Hydrogen Challenge Sandbox which aims to ensure regulation is fit for purpose and to reduce challenges association with the introduction of hydrogen. Expected to run until the end of February 2025, the UKCAA will work with the organisations to explore the hazards, risks and safety challenges within individual projects. https://lnkd.in/d65n-mNR

Israel Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure - משרד האנרגיה והתשתיות is spearheading efforts to increase the usage of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in the country. An inter-ministerial committee will be established to drive these initiatives through incentives and explore regulatory solutions to boost SAF adoption among airlines. Earlier this year, EL AL Israel Airlines marked a significant milestone by operating its first flight using SAF. A Boeing 787 Dreamliner completed the journey with a 30% SAF blend, showcasing the national carrier’s commitment to sustainability. Further bolstering these efforts, Carbon Green Consulting Ltd, an Israeli joint venture between the Ralco Energy Group and the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev Blechner Center for Industrial Catalysis and Process Development, announced a $2.4 million investment to produce SAF in Israel. The JV plans to build the country’s first SAF demonstration plant by 2025. These initiatives reflect Israel’s dedication to advancing sustainable aviation practices, aligning with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation sector. #AvfoilNews #SustainableAviationFuel #SAF #Israel #ElAl #RalcoGroup #BlechnerCenter #GreenAviation #Sustainability #Innovation

The MIDLANDS AEROSPACE ALLIANCE, with support from industry partners, is leading the charge towards net-zero emissions in the aerospace sector by 2050. This collaborative effort, known as the DMAC project, focuses on hydrogen-powered aviation and overcoming challenges in infrastructure and regulation. In an ambitious bid to decarbonise the aerospace industry, the Midlands Aerospace Alliance (MAA) has launched the Decarbonising the Midlands Aerospace Cluster (DMAC) project. With funding from the UK Government and support from industry partners like ITP Aero and Collins Aerospace, the MAA aims to create a blueprint for reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. 🏴For all the latest in Aerospace, Aviation and Defence in Wales follow Aerospace Wales Forum Ltd. World Fuel will supply the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence (UK MOD) with a further 5,150,000 litres (5,150m3) of aviation fuel. This follows a collaboration between World Fuel and the UK MOD that saw the successful delivery of 4,000,000 litres of SAF between November 2023 and February 2024. SAF is a crucial element in the aviation industry's journey towards decarbonization, as it significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional jet fuel. “World Fuel is committed to collaboration and investment to help our defence customers transition to renewables. Defence agreements like the Inverness SAF program demonstrate our ability to access our extensive supply chain capabilities and deliver renewables where our military customers are ready,” said John Wynn, senior vice president, government solutions, World Fuel Services. “Our experience in defence fuel supply chains was honed in Afghanistan, where we supported NATO. Most recently, we were awarded the Australian Defence Forces’ deployable bulk fuel distribution system. We applaud the UK RAF for their leading efforts demonstrated by raising the bar with larger volumes and longer commitments. As this continues, SAF use will become more common throughout the Commonwealth’s Defence organizations.” Read more about World Fuel Services providing Sustainable Aviation Fuel to the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence with this link to the press release: https://lnkd.in/gHTKWids

In the scope of the Clean Aviation #ACAP project, another Technical Integration Review Meeting has recently been held at #ZAL. This meeting provided a valuable opportunity to engage in discussions with #DLR and #ONERA to define an integrated on-board systems design for an LH2-powered short-medium range (#SMR) aircraft. We also explored potential and feasible LH2 pipe routing concepts, considering key questions such as: Where can we install the hydrogen pipes? What conditions must we consider? It is crucial to address possible interdependencies with other on-board systems when integrating the hydrogen supply system into the aircraft. This includes considering minimum distances and routing through different installation spaces. #TUHH #FST #CleanAviation #Hydrogen
