🌟 The Synergy Between Leaders and Assistants: Lessons from My Journey 🌟 Reflecting on my journey, I started as a "part-time-temporary" assistant at Saddleback Church in my early 30s. I had never been an assistant. I'm very fortunate for the patience and belief of people like Lance Witt and David Chrzan! Little did I know that role would lead me down a path in ministry and as an EA to become a strategic partner to influential leaders like Eric Geiger and Pete Briscoe. Along the way, I've learned invaluable lessons key to being a successful strategic partner. 1. Assertiveness: Being ready to make decisions that push the mission forward. 2. Confidence: Knowing your worth and abilities. 3. Intellectual Curiosity: Continuously learning and growing. 4. Adaptability: Navigating through challenges with creativity and resilience. 5. Problem Solving: Bringing solutions to the table. 6. Personable: Building and maintaining relationships. 7. Grit: Persevering through obstacles. 8. High EQ: Managing relationships effectively. 9. Supportive: Being a steadfast ally in the mission. 10. Trust: Forming a strong foundation for the partnership. My journey inspired me to create a coaching program focused on helping leaders and their assistants thrive together. I especially like the part that talks about defining the role of the board. I work with non-profits, ESOPS, and closely held family or privately held companies. Many of them struggle with some common governance questions: 1. What does the board do or what should they do? 2. Does having a advisory or fiduciary board cede control of the organization? 3. What are the duties and responsibilities of board members? 4. What skill sets should the board have? If being more resilient in 2024 is a goal, or you want to grow, or improve your operational excellence, rethinking your board may give you the tools you need to accomplish these goals. Yesterday, I made a post on navigating the challenges of the Executive Directorship in Nonprofits. I want to conclude with the aspect of overcoming Challenges as an Executive Director; 1. Build a Strong Support Network: Surround yourself with mentors, peers, and advisors who can provide guidance and support. 2. Invest in Professional Development: Continuously enhance your skills and knowledge through training, workshops, and networking opportunities. 3. Embrace Innovation: Stay open to new ideas, technologies, and approaches that can enhance organizational effectiveness and efficiency. 4. Prioritize Self-Care: Balancing the demands of the role with personal well-being is essential for long-term sustainability. Make time for rest, relaxation, and activities that recharge your energy. 5. Celebrate Successes: Acknowledge and celebrate achievements, no matter how small, to boost morale and motivation within the organization. Despite the myriad challenges, serving as an Executive Director of a nonprofit can be immensely rewarding. By embracing resilience, innovation, and collaboration, you can navigate obstacles and lead your organization toward greater impact and sustainability.
