Excited to share insights from my recent study on the biodiversity of butterflies in the Baddagana wetland. As members of Class Insecta, Order Lepidoptera, butterflies play a vital role in our ecosystem. The study aimed to evaluate the diversity of butterfly species, assess their conservation status, and propose actionable conservation measures to protect these enchanting creatures within their unique habitats. Conducted between August and October 2023, the research involved three daily visual encounter survey sessions from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm at predetermined locations, maximizing sampling efforts. The comprehensive observations, documented in field notebooks, utilized field guides for species identification. Notably, the study revealed 15 butterfly species from 4 families, with an average of 30 butterflies observed daily. Common species like Psyche (Leptosia nina), Glassy Tiger (Parantica aglea), Common Crow (Euploea core), and White-four ring (Euploea core) were prevalent in the wetland habitat, while Lime Butterfly (Papilio demoleus) and Great Eggfly (Hypolimnas bolina) were identified as uncommon or rare. The Blue Glassy Tiger/Ideopsis vulgaris was classified as vulnerable, while 14 others were deemed least concerned according to the 2012 Red List assessment. These findings underscore the importance of the Baddagana Wetland for butterfly conservation, as most observed species were either absent or less common outside this habitat. The study recommends cultivating suitable feeding and host plants in the wetland area to enhance butterfly populations and promote conservation efforts. I presented this research abstract at the '28th International Forestry and Environment Symposium 2024,' which was hosted by the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science, University of Sri Jayawardanapura, Sri Lanka, on January 5th and 6th. The experience has been truly enriching, and I extend my sincere gratitude to Dr. Kasun Salindra for his invaluable support throughout this endeavor. Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC) is proud to announce a new publication co-authored by our member, Dr. Rodney Chimner, in the journal Wetlands Ecology and Management. Title: "Characterizing northern white-cedar communities in harvested and unharvested lowland forests of Michigan, USA" This research provides valuable insights into the complexity of lowland northern white-cedar forest communities in Michigan. Key findings include: • Identification of three white-cedar community subtypes in unharvested stands • Classification of six community types in harvested stands • Analysis of ecological gradients affecting community composition • Potential pathways of compositional transition after harvest These results are crucial for forest management planning and stewardship, offering forestry practitioners a more nuanced understanding of white-cedar ecosystems and their responses to harvesting. FOREST WATER QUALITY / Pan Pac Forest Products, an important source of Abodo’s Radiata Pine, regularly monitor streams that flow through their forestry sites. By collecting samples from catchments, they are able to check eDNA sequencing in the water, which reveals the biodiversity of the stream. The Pākuratahi Land Use Study involves the analysis of water samples, hydrology, stream morphology and stream ecology in neighbouring catchments with different land uses over a 12-year period. Part One of this study, published in 2006, showed that the pine forest catchment had the lowest overall yield of sediment even when the sediment discharge during harvest was taken into account. Part Two of the study began last year and uses new techniques like eDNA sampling, which has already revealed at-risk adult whitebait kōaro living in the pine forest catchment. 🌲 #Publication_Alert 🌲 I am thrilled to share that my latest paper, "Assessing Forest Cover Changes and Fragmentation in the Himalayan Temperate Region: Implications for Forest Conservation and Management," has been published as a #corresponding_author in the prestigious "Journal of Forestry Research" (Q1). This research dives into the critical changes occurring in the forest cover of the Himalayan temperate region, a key area for biodiversity and ecological balance. Through detailed analysis and field studies, we've mapped out the extent of forest fragmentation and its dire implications for conservation efforts. Key insights from our study highlight the urgent need for integrated management strategies that can mitigate the impact of fragmentation and promote sustainable conservation practices.
