I regularly get asked how Data recruitment is going at Ocado Technology. 👉 To provide some insight, here are some common themes and responses I'm observing. ⤵ 📉 Data recruitment volumes are down 35% YOY > a lot of upskilling & investing in what we’ve got is in full flow - there's much less growth across 2024, similar to most tech companies. Across the next few months, much of the external recruitment growth is actually coming from Full Stack Software Engineers (mid-staff level - Java/React focus) - stay tuned for this as I’m going to be helping the SE teams out 😉 🔴 The hardest data roles to fill are all Junior (1-3 years). The volume of applications is immense and slightly frustrating to manage. Gen-Z’ers do like the remote work as well > I’ll leave that debate for another day. 🔷 48% of all data offers have been directly sourced via cord 🏳🌈🏳️⚧️ or LinkedIn. The lower volume of requisitions has helped, meaning more opportunity to source. ChatGPT is an absolute gamechanger in supporting market mapping. 👉 Data Analyst roles with BigQuery and Looker are by far the most in demand candidates we look for. Some teams like their Analyst to have Python. I envisage that in 24 months most will start requiring Python. 💻 More teams are utilising take-home-challenges (we use Codility) to form the base of a verbal technical interview - rather than a live task.
