Jeff Heynen, with Dell'Oro Group, said a fixed networks contract between AT&T and Nokia probably isn't anywhere near the scale of what Nokia lost when AT&T gave its open RAN business to Ericsson. Nevertheless, AT&T has big plans for fiber deployments. “This could potentially turn into a very lucrative contact for Nokia,” said Heynen. Fierce Network https://lnkd.in/gzncZ_Pg

Obviously, any commentary on AT&T's internal motivation is speculative. "Extend[ing an] olive branch" is not the first one that I'd guess. More likely, it's a refresh of the existing commercial agreement, amplified by AT&T's (belatedly expanded) FTTH ambitions. Absent discontent with Nokia, there is little reason for them to bring in a new vendor. That's an expensive and disruptive exercise that telcos do not take lightly. Besides, the LIghtspeed MF is a great platform (at least from where I sit), and while all four competitive OLTs have their strong points, I don't see any compelling case for AT&T switching vendors. I read the story as "business as usual".

The FWA that Nokia might put on-air in furtherance of wireline could stand a chance at being the first Open RAN with proven interoperability within AT&T
