📣Food waste has always troubled me, especially given the number of people suffering from hunger and malnutrition around the world.

🇺🇬In Uganda, more than 40% of fruits and vegetables are discarded or lost, primarily during the harvesting and post-harvest handling stages. The post-harvest systems in Uganda are inadequate, leading to significant food loss and waste.

💸With access to funding, I could implement a ‘table for two’ concept where customers pay for a full meal but receive only what they can consume, leaving the untouched portion for someone in need.

🥙Additionally, I would establish ‘end-of-day kitchens’ where restaurants and markets donate unsold and unwanted food items to those in need.

🍱Currently, without funding, I am focused on creating a zero food waste household. I also aim to contribute to advocacy efforts that seek to reduce food loss and waste.

Was really great to speak to BBC radio Sheffield today to help shed light on the massive issue of food waste that is happening in our world. In January alone, we rescued 64 tonnes of useable surplus food! It would have gone to landfill otherwise and produced plenty of GHG emissions. Not to mention how energy intensive it is to just produce the food. What a waste! Check out myself and my colleague Gavin, speaking about our first pop-up market. A new project we are rolling out in the city to help share our surplus food. We want to create a hyper-local sustainable food system in Sheffield where nothing goes to waste and everyone has access to affordable healthy food. We hope you had a lovely St Patrick’s Day! This long weekend (in Ireland) we are sharing #foodiversewiththeuniverse from Donegal to Devon, from Navan to Nairobi, and from Jobstown to Jakarta. FoodCloud is bringing virtual food banking to Southeast Asia and our Partnerships Director Sheena Forde and Project Manager Catriona McCarthy are meeting with FoodCycle Indonesia. In collaboration with the The Global FoodBanking Network, FoodCloud conducted extensive in-country research in Indonesia to prepare for the trial of FoodCloud’s food donation platform, Foodiverse, which connects donors of surplus food with beneficiaries and recipients. Indonesia is the second largest producer of food waste, the country generated 57.4m tonnes of food waste in 2019, and this is predicted to rise to 88.6m tonnes by 2030. Bit of a lightbulb moment at the AFN Network+ Big Tent conference this week in Sheffield. We know food is too cheap to support sustainable farming, but we also know there's a huge issue with affordability among low income families - even though food in the UK is among the most affordable in the world when comparing average disposable income to food costs. However, what hadn't hit home was that the BIG difference between where we are now, and where we were 40-50 years ago, is HOUSING COSTS. With housing now consuming up to 80% (or sometimes more) of disposable income, no wonder food needs to be cheap. Can we solve the problems in food and farming if we don't first solve the housing crisis? Dominic SingleDadSW Watters laid this out starkly at the conference, and has also done so in a recent AFN webinar (https://lnkd.in/eANg3Tep). Given that shelter is down there with food in the most basic of human needs (according to Maslow), it's clear to me that we can't address food and farming issues in a sustainable way until we deal with the housing crisis. Empowering communities through smart farms! 👩👧👦💚😀🙏🫛🥦🥬 These are the satisfied and happy faces of incredible women who, as part of the humanitarian project in Serbia called "Empowered Woman - Stronger Family," receive Hydro Coops to ensure a safe source of food for their children amidst changing climatic conditions. This initiative also provides them with an opportunity to produce surplus goods that they can sell at local farm markets, thereby generating additional income for their families. This project has #empoweredwomen in underdeveloped areas of Serbia to become agro-entrepreneurs, enabling them to achieve economic independence from state social support. With their own small farms covering just 16m2 (9+7m2), they can produce vegetables and poultry meat or eggs. In the face of recent challenges such as the pandemic, rising food prices, and #climatechange , the most vulnerable populations are disproportionately affected by poor nutrition and the lack of funds for healthy food.
