Today marks one of the biggest achievements of my career so far! Almost five years ago, I left my interview at Mintivo feeling excited about the future. Two key points during the interview won me over and have stayed with me ever since: 1 - Mintivo aimed to ensure that every new team member would leave with a better CV than they joined with. There was a strong emphasis on courses, development, trying new things, and ensuring everything was mutually beneficial. 2 - Mintivo planned to build the team in such a way that recruiting above people wouldn't be necessary. Instead, the focus was on internal development, upskilling team members, and backfilling them as they advanced. Over the past few years, under the guidance of Jason Lovell, I've made sure that every decision moved us closer to these goals. We introduced a tiered service desk, took the first steps towards implementing a training academy, created an apprenticeship program, and opened up development pathways between teams. Today, I can finally say that we have achieved what we set out to accomplish. Internal promotions have occurred at every level of the service desk, and instead of hiring above, we've hired a new apprentice to backfill. A huge shoutout to the entire team! - What is the hardest part of being a CEO? I asked Henk-Jan Wegman, CEO of Rensa Family, an international group of technical suppliers and wholesalers for the installation industry, made of specialised family-owned companies with >1,700 employees. - Not knowing everybody, not personally knowing every employee of Rensa Family, he immediately answered.  - I did not expect this answer, I said. - Well, what did you think I would answer? - Firing people, travelling all the time, not having time, business pressure, stuff like that.  - In my first job as a CEO, when I was 27, I had to fire 250 people. I found jobs for 249 of them. But I still remember that 1 person, although I should focus on the 249. Firing people is hard, but either the business is not ok and they will not be ok there, either they are not happy and performing at the current job, and even if it is hard at first, they will be better later. - And what is the best part of being a CEO? I continued. - The best part is seeing people grow and evolve. It’s all about the people!
