In the rapidly evolving landscape of business, understanding your company's maturity level in commercial excellence (Bid Management as a part of that) - is crucial. Yet, many companies often overestimate their capabilities, thinking they perform stronger than they actually do. Others lack a clear benchmark for what constitutes best practice. Andre Du Plessis shares thoughts on: When is Business Development successful? Business Development isn't complicated. It's all about making the business more successful. Therefore, it can't be a standalone concept; it needs to be seen in the context of the larger business vision and priorities. That sounds simple, but in reality that clarity can be hard to come by. Every business today has to deal with an unending list of competing priorities and stakeholders, all coming at them in a rapidly changing environment. There's no way to do it all, so really understanding the bigger picture is how you can be strategic about where you invest your resources for maximum impact. Business development therefore needs to strike a balance between a strategic vision, coupled with the necessary tactical agility. Which begs the question: How can we do that? Start by understanding the difference between Sales and Business Development - Business Development needs to be focussed on identifying and creating opportunities (be it new markets, partnerships etc.). Sales in turn needs to focus on identifying and cultivating leads before ultimately converting them into customers. The one is strategic, the other tactical, but the success of both is clearly dependent on each other. Create a Business Development strategy - start by identifying and researching your stakeholders (both internal & external) as they ultimately determine what “success” looks like. Complement this with customer and market research in the context of the stakeholders. Armed with this context, set and align goals that will reliably move your organization toward its strategic goals while serving its stakeholders. Then move over to action by identifying prospective customers and cultivate those relationships in the long run. You then need to constantly look at how your strategy is performing and find ways to experiment, tweak, and improve. Keep your customers at the center of your strategy - they are simply your most important stakeholder, so you need to understand them at a deep level in order to build long lasting relationships. Finally, appreciate that your customers also change, so it is important to regularly revisit your assumptions around them. Want to go deeper on this topic? Yesterday we discussed the importance of building a strategy for personal wins, but what about business ensuring success? I am always happy to be a part of you and your businesses success story. The Vision/Traction Organizer (a.k.a. V/TO) is a powerful tool designed to crystallize and communicate your company's vision and the steps necessary to achieve it. By distilling your vision into eight critical questions covering Core Values, focus, long-term targets, and marketing strategy, it creates a simple yet comprehensive framework. This clarity enables every member of your team to align with the company's direction, ensuring that everyone is working towards the same objectives with a clear understanding of their role in the journey. Implementing the V/TO not only aligns your team but also sets a solid foundation for execution, turning your vision into reality. It shifts the focus from what your business aims to achieve in the long run to what actions need to be taken in the short term to get there, including setting one-year plans and 90-day priorities, known as Rocks. Losing Control Over Business Operations: A Founder’s Nightmare Ever felt like you’re losing grip on your e-commerce business operations? You’re definitely not alone. It’s a common struggle among e-commerce founders and clients alike. They often describe the stress of managing operations and the fear that their hard-earned vision might unravel. But there’s a path to regaining control without resorting to micromanagement. Here’s why e-commerce founders might lose control: ❌ Lack of Clear Direction: Without a defined vision, mission, and strategic goals, your team can become disorganized and lost. ❌ Ineffective Delegation: Poor delegation can lead to micromanagement and overwhelm. ❌ Poor Communication: Inefficient communication can cause misunderstandings and delays. (It may sound cliché, but it’s crucial.) ❌ Inability to Manage Change: Slow adaptation to market shifts or new strategies can stall progress. ❌ Inconsistent Processes: Fluctuating methods can create chaos. Consistency is key. Fixing these issues typically takes about six months, but it’s worth it to regain control. Here’s how to address each one: 🎯 Set a Clear Direction: Define your vision, mission, and values. Break them into 2-3 year strategic goals and ensure full team buy-in. 🎯 Delegate Effectively: Clarify accountabilities first. Then learn and apply the four stages of delegation. 🎯 Improve Communication: Focus on essential communication. Use tools like ClickUp for task-related discussions to reduce communication clutter by at least 50%. 🎯 Manage Change: Understand that growth involves change. Address it seriously and have one-on-one discussions with your team about upcoming changes. 🎯 Standardize Processes: Implement consistent processes and systems to enhance efficiency and stability. By addressing these areas, you can regain control, foster autonomy, and create a more enjoyable and self-managing organization. #coaching #growthmindset #businesscoach #ecommerce
