DFER CEO Jorge Elorza in a new Education Week article by Rick Hess: "What has struck me the most is the extent of the crisis in public education and the lack of urgency among political leaders to address it. Public education is the bedrock of opportunity in America, but too many of our academic institutions are simply not making the grade. Kids are not getting the equitable opportunities they deserve—and there is too little being done to change this." https://lnkd.in/gJ45zeP6

In 2024, California voters will have a chance to make quality education a civil right. All the states which have education under attack by Republicans should form a coalition for high quality education as a right. Dr. Jill Biden is an educator and U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren was a teacher. They should tour the Red states and battleground states with State and U,S. Representatives and Senators for right to quality education. U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders also knows a lot about inequality. Maybe quality education can become a National Constitutional right. https://lnkd.in/gRBfXsDS

“As leaders dedicated to public education, we have seen numerous reforms come and go. Battles have been fought in classrooms, boardrooms and communities, with many education advocates always striving to build a system that serves all students equitably. Yet, despite decades of policy- and community-building efforts, a persistent structural issue remains: public education is built on a governance system that excludes those it is meant to serve. “ In this op-ed for The 74 Media, Ben Austin, Sandra Boyd, and our own Doannie Tran outline the importance of the new the National EduDemocracy Landscape Map from The Cornerstone Project - An EduDemocracy Network #education https://rebrand.ly/cfvc7dw

Education for All As an educator and community advocate who has dedicated 25 years to serving underserved and minority students in Coney Island, I have a deep understanding of the challenges these students face in our educational system. It is disheartening to see the lack of meaningful action being taken to address these issues, despite the rhetoric from political parties seeking votes from minority populations. It is clear that the focus needs to shift from empty promises to concrete measures that improve education for students who need it the most. My firsthand experience highlights the struggles that many students have with traditional, print-rich materials and standardized tests. It is evident that alternative approaches, such as hands-on materials and project-based learning applications, can be instrumental in helping these students succeed. The failure to adequately meet the educational needs of underserved and minority students in New York City is setting them up for continued challenges and disadvantages. Despite parents voicing their concerns to politicians and superintendents, it seems that their pleas are falling on deaf ears. The refusal of key decision-makers, including the Governor, Mayor, and Chancellor, to address these pressing issues is unacceptable. It is alarming to witness the disconnect between the urgent needs of these students and the apparent political calculations being made about their voting power. Education should not be a bargaining chip or a tool for political gain. Every child, regardless of their background, deserves access to a quality education that equips them with the skills and resources needed to succeed. As someone who has dedicated their career to advocating for the educational rights of underserved students, my voice and perspective are crucial in holding policymakers accountable. It is time for meaningful action to be taken to ensure that all students in New York City receive the support and opportunities they deserve. Thank you Scott Krivitsky
