Quotas can strengthen the participation of underrepresented groups in political decision-making, but the numbers don’t tell the whole story. Without other support systems, quotas don't always automatically improve the targeted group's opportunities to influence political processes. Also, authoritarian countries may promote political inclusion only to increase the legitimacy of the authoritarian government. Iida Kalmanlehto's blog explores the pros, cons and good practices of quotas in decision-making. #democracy #inclusion #GenderEquality

Today is IDAHOBIT Day, and I'm reflecting on the great work of Pathways to Politics for Women and the benefits of a more representative parliament. At the core of electing more LGBTIQ+ people is the fact that representation matters. A parliament that better reflects our wider community enables it to make decisions and provide scrutiny that better represents the experiences, needs, views, and aspirations of the population it serves. A greater diversity of elected representatives is a significant step towards a healthier democracy. Having people at the table with significantly different backgrounds and perspectives can facilitate a more dynamic and productive conversation. This conversation is fundamental to a constructive and constructively critical exchange of views. Let's continue to push for a more inclusive and representative parliament.
Today marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about discrimination and violence faced by LGBTQI+ communities 🌈 Representation of LGBTQI+ people in Australian parliaments is gradually increasing nationwide. But it still falls short of reflecting the full diversity of our community. ICYMI, earlier this year we posted a Pathways to Politics LGBTQI+ political panel: breaking barriers and building allies. Facilitated by broadcaster, advocate and Pathways to Politics alum Nevena Spirovska, this important discussion features: - Minister the Hon Harriet Shing, the first openly lesbian member of the Parliament of Victoria - Dr Judy Tang, Victorian Pride Centre Board Director and Victorian Multicultural Commissioner - Lucy Skelton: 2020 Labor Candidate for Kew Our panellists share their personal reflections on being LGBTQI+ public figures, politicians, and political candidates. They discuss their experiences, challenges, and the ways we can all contribute to positive cultural change for LGBTQI+ individuals across the political spectrum in our parliaments and councils.
