Quotas can strengthen the participation of underrepresented groups in political decision-making, but the numbers don’t tell the whole story. Without other support systems, quotas don't always automatically improve the targeted group's opportunities to influence political processes. Also, authoritarian countries may promote political inclusion only to increase the legitimacy of the authoritarian government. This to be welcomed - but needed to start much earlier. If we are to have councils which represent the wider make up of society - not just the male, pale, stale and poorly educated demographic - we need work like this to be an on-going activity. DI recently highlighted these values at its USAID-supported Elections and Democracy (EDA) Activity Ready to Ascend Conference in Bong County, Liberia. The conference aimed to empower and advocate for women's engagement in politics, focusing on addressing challenges and exploring strategies to enhance representation. Panels centered on overcoming barriers and grassroots mobilization, while presentations covered critical areas such as the economy and healthcare. The conference had notable guests, including USAID AOR Mike Johannes and DI President and CEO Eric Bjornlund, who emphasized the global significance of women in politics. The event celebrated successes, including Pandora C. W. Zaizay's appointment as City Mayor of Voinjama City, Lofa County, and Antoinette Worwlee Nimely's role as superintendent of Grand Kru County. These stories highlighted the tangible outcomes of empowering women.
