Forests are an indispensable #climatesolution that can't be substituted and should always be included in the discussion amongst new and improved technological solutions for rising #carbonemissions. Join our own Dee MacLeod Lawrence and Jodi Manning, along with our friends Dr. Sassan Saatchi and Alexia Kelly, for a panel discussion on April 24 at SF Climate Week — we’ll gather to discuss the importance of protecting our #endangered forests, the current work being done, the positive impact seen to date, and how we can collectively rebuild confidence in forestry #carboncredits. RSVP today! #sfclimateweek

Reflecting on the successful 4th Korea-Austria Forestry Cooperative Committee 🌳🤝. Our discussions, led by esteemed delegates from both nations, delved into crucial topics like forest fire and avalanche control, forest management infrastructure, promoting a virtuous cycle in local forestry, and the significance of forest therapy and culture. Highlighting Austria's leadership in sustainable forest management and Korea's innovative approaches, this meeting has paved the way for deeper cooperation and shared learning. Special thanks to our Austrian delegate Gerfried Gruber (Head of the Directorate Forest Policy) and Korean delegate Song Hee Nam (Director General, International Affairs Bureau) for their insightful contributions and commitment to advancing forestry practices globally. Looking forward to the continued partnership and shared progress in sustainable forest management. #Forestry #SustainableManagement #KoreaAustriaPartnership #AdvantageAustria"

What really struck me from this report (below) about British International Investment's approach to forestry in Africa is just how small the industry is. The continent has lost tens of millions of hectares of natural forest, and has replanted very little to meet demand for timber and fuel wood. Why isn't the industry larger? African forestry companies have historically struggled to turn a profit because of a set of challenges that have made growing wood more expensive and selling it more difficult. Land acquisition and community relations have also sometimes been handled badly in the past. But, as this report explains, lessons have been learned. Good community relations and environmental stewardship are now integral, investments have been made in downstream processing, and the commerical situation looks much more promising. The growth of the sustainable forestry industry in Africa would bring with it many positive social and environmental impacts - rural employment, local value-addition and import substitution, reduced pressure on natural forests for fuelwood - but of course planted forests can also sequester carbon and protect biodiversity. Plantations don't do much for biodiversity in themselves but certified sustainable forestry requires biodiversity protection within concessions. The long-term presence of a commerically sustainable forestry company, which is providing tangible benefits to the local community, can protect local natural forests that would otherwise be denuded. The possibility of additional revenue streams from biodiversity credits could expand those activities even further. It only remains for me to urge you to read more in the report published today, and to thank our investees New Forests,:Criterion Africa Partners and Miro Forestry and Timber Products for their help and Wellspring Development for doing a terrific job writing it. #impactinvesting #naturebasedsolutions #forestry #Africa
On #InternationalDayofForests, we're focussing on the potential of African forestry for people and planet. Sustainable forestry companies generate rural employment and meet demand for wood that is often still taken from natural forests. Sustainable forestry can also remove carbon from the atmosphere and protect biodiversity. Our new report explains why we're committed to sustainable African forestry, outlines our current strategy, and discusses the challenges and opportunities for impact on communities, climate, and biodiversity. The report showcases our investments and partnerships with New Forests, Criterion Africa Partners and Miro Forestry and Timber Products. Wilding conifers cause problems to conservation areas around the country, with their fast-growing and easy-spreading seed. Often incorrectly referred to as ‘wilding pines’ (when they are in fact conifers), this invasive species must be managed in order for native trees and vegetation to have room to grow. For Timberlands, one of Abodo’s key forestry partners, controlling these wildings not only aligns with their Restorative Development Goals for the Kaingaroa Forest Estate, but is also mandated by the Principles for Commercial Plantation Forest Management in New Zealand (ES207). Timberlands engages an environmental consulting agency to target the areas where wildling control is required, such as around the banks of the Rangitaiki River and Mount Tarawera. This is an ongoing process, with trees removed through a mixture of machinery and manual pulling. Follow the link to read more about the efforts being made by Timberlands to reach its high level Restorative Development Goals. #fscforest #forestmanagement #landmanagement

If everyone in the world planted a tree today.... we will probably have 3 billion trees by tomorrow and in less then a year we will reach 4 trillion ... but its not just about planting trees.... its about zeroing our business and daily carbon footprint and to keep the world clean, peaceful and green biodiversified for future generations to come
