Our Jemez Pueblo and Espanola Crews successfully carried out a prescribed burn over the weekend! The crews gained valuable experience, working on ignition teams with drip torches and patrolling the fire line for spot fires. It was a proud moment to see several USDA Forest Service firefighters who started their careers through the FSYC program contributing to the effort. After three years of preparation, the 1701-acre burn unit finally met the weather and fuel conditions required to proceed. The burn was executed as planned, with aerial ignitions complementing the work on the ground. The Zuni Mountains Collaborative is working to meet the critical fuelwood needs of local communities, especially Indigenous and Hispanic households in west-central New Mexico.
