After many conversations with carriers all over North America, we heard a common theme that there is a skills gap for programming resources in the industry for those companies that rely on their legacy systems to function on a daily basis. It is known by many names- IBM iSeries, AS400, LTL400, etc., though the programming language is the same, RPG (Report Program Generator). The AS400 system is simply a database, but it integrates with many other systems and although our businesses have evolved, the AS400 remains the backbone for many of today's largest companies. The transportation industry is one that has considered this system as vital to their operations. Well we heard you loud and clear, and as an IT solutions provider, we decided to close that skills gap by building out a curriculum, starting a training program, and delivering those resources to backfill and support your existing programming teams to give you the peace of mind that you need. If you have a need today for fully trained RPG programming resources to support your legacy system, drop me a note and let's discuss! #yahoofinance

The market for #AS400 developers can vary depending on factors such as location, industry demand, and the specific skills and experience of the developer. As of my last update in January 2022, the demand for AS400 developers has generally been stable, with many companies still relying on #IBM i (formerly known as AS400) systems to run critical business applications. However, it's worth noting that the AS400 platform, although still widely used, is considered legacy technology by some, and there has been a gradual shift towards more modern platforms and technologies in recent years. This shift may affect the demand for AS400 developers over time, although there will likely continue to be a need for developers who can maintain and modernize existing AS400 systems. Overall, AS400 developers with strong skills in #RPG (Report Program Generator) programming language, DB2 database management, and experience with IBM iSeries systems may still find opportunities in industries such as manufacturing, finance, healthcare, and logistics where AS400 systems are prevalent. Additionally, developers who can adapt to new technologies and integrate AS400 systems with modern solutions may be particularly valuable in the current market.

Helping AS/400 Admins to become AS/400 Developers🚀. Follow me for Posts on RPGLE, CLP, Db2/400, and SQLRPGLE.
Hey there 😉 ! Have you ever wondered how the AS/400 became IBM i? Let's take a look together! 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - In AS400, AS stands for "Application System”. - It is object-oriented i.e. everything on the system is an object and the data is stored in files. - It is best suited for mid-level industry - It is mostly used for business applications such as ERP, Banks, transportation & logistics, finance, and manufacturing industries, etc 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 - It has an integrated DB2 database management system. - We can use different programming languages on AS/400 system such as RPG, RPGLE ,COBOL, CL, SQL, SQLRPGLE etc. 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 CASE tools are available for AS/400 systems such as Accelerator for IBM i, Synon, LANSA, IBM Rational Business Developer Extension, etc. 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 1. The AS/400 system was introduced by IBM in 1988. 2. The AS/400 system runs the OS/400 operating system 3. Later In 2000, IBM renamed the AS/400 system to eServer iSeries. 4. Later In 2004, the iSeries changed to eServer i5 and OS/400 to i5/OS. 5. The AS/400 system was renamed System I in 2006. 6. Further, in 2008, System I merged with System P and became IBM Power Systems. 7. At the same time, the i5/OS was renamed IBM i. Enjoy this? ♻️ Repost it to your network and follow D John for more. The future for AS/400 developers looks promising. While the workforce is aging, there's a high demand for skilled professionals who can bridge the gap between the robust AS/400 legacy systems and modern technologies. Developers should focus on modernizing their skillsets by learning contemporary languages, web development, and cloud concepts. By becoming proficient in both traditional RPG and newer technologies, AS/400 developers will be in a prime position to navigate modernization projects and remain highly valuable assets for organizations that rely on these powerful systems.

Posted 130224 Tag #jbasoftware How can I still get frustrated at the contents of a memo written 28 years ago on the 28th September 1995? I appreciate the context was the fear within JBA Sales in particular with regard to SAP AG linking up with IBM to deliver SAP R/3 in our AS400 marketplace. But JBA Group Marketing writing a memo to General Managers (UK), Sales Managers (UK) with copies to US General Managers, Country Managers full of so many errors and false promises was not going to help matters. Firstly SAP R/3 was a classic three tier solution of database servers, application servers and presentation clients. Prior to JBA at Halfords I used the SAP AG Adabas Database and their Natural Programming Language (cira 1985) on an IBM 3096 (MVS) and their software was exceptional. German software engineering was outstanding with their only weak spot being complexity. But not so much "application complexity" more setup and configuration complexity. In fact business functionality was often their weak spot. In terms of application design it was the "German" way or no way. Plus they had some strange ways of doing business. Anyway it was not so much the "untruths" in this memo but the false promise of "JBA announces its agreement with IBM to produce MVS and OS/2 versions of System 21 in 1996." that bugged me. We had no access to any IBM System/390 Platform at JBA-SPL nor the skill set to work on it. As for OS/2 this was about to die with the onset of Windows. We set the "sales force" up to think we could deliver on these platforms along with Unix, with its many derivatives, but it was impossible. Unfortunately Sales commenced to sell these futures. In my BTU role I struggled to get an AS400 to run Ratioplan software on let alone access to Unix boxes. Also politically I was not sent the software to test because it always failed our BTU tests. SAP's arrival rattled us but they had huge struggles with SAP R/3 that they eventually overcame but it was not easy for them. But with typical German thoroughness, attention to detail and tenacity SAP R/3 lead to SAP S/4HANA. But with some clever footwork JBA could have avoided their threat building ourselves a bigger enough market share to be in business today as JBA. Rant over. Banno

Looks like the Job industry in AS400 RPG is looking up - Previously - managers were like "What percentage did you do Programming to Administration ? " In the AS400 world - it is one in the same - Anyone with over 10 years experience in AS400, it is one in the same... You have to be a master of the entire system - Now it is mostly web based administration, I prefer line command - but that is going away. The HMC Console can be virtualized, the entire Partition can be Virtual Machine vs Logical Partitions - and the Web Server on the AS400 can host HTML Javascript Python and SQL Function calls - Therefore... When an AS400 Engineer, tells you they did both - IT"S A REQUIREMENT - You can't just write code - not good code anyway - If you do - that is someone that "INSTALLS 3rd PARTY SOFTWARE" - not someone that writes it from scratch -
