The UEFA EURO 2024 is heating up with some scintillating goals and a fervent atmosphere! While the FIFA Football World Cup remains the most watched sports event by far, the Euros also generate quite some excitement among football fans. Here are some interesting snippets (courtesy Business of Sport podcast) from the tournament that's taking place in Germany this time:
-The 2024 edition is the 17th edition of the tournament, with matches being held in 10 stadiums across the country
-The total prize money up for grabs is €331 million with the winners of the tournament receiving a total of €28.5m across all their games. Here's how it's broken up- Qualifying for the tournament gives a team €9.25m, winning each group game €1m, while reaching the knockout stages has a prize money of €1.5m. The prize money goes up significantly as the tournament progresses with the quarter-finalists receiving €2.5m & semis-finalists €4m with the runners-up and winners of the tournament receiving €5m and €8m respectively.
-England have the most expensive squad valued at €1.52 billion, followed by France at €1.23b and Portugal at €1.05b. Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe lead the player valuations, with an estimated €180m each.
-The tournament is expected to generate €2.4b in revenue for UEFA across media rights, commercial sponsorship, ticketing, hospitality with media rights contributing to almost half the total!
-Interestingly, the tournament should have a positive impact on Germany's economy which shrank 0.3% in 2023. Beer sales that are on a downward trend are expected to rebound, along with an increase in hospitality revenues and overall infrastructure upgrades that have been happening in preparation for the tournament.
-However, despite not hosting the tournament, the true economical benefactors might just be England! It's expected that a successful campaign (reaching the semis or the finals) could lead to spends of close to €2.75b in the country, with 80 million pints or €400m worth of beer being sold and 12 million people buying the most popular sports food- pizza!
Ask any football fan and they'll tell you that football is an emotion. It's also quite a business! Sharing a small clip of the Dutch football fans lining up the streets of Hamburg waiting for their team's first game!

The new format of UEFA's club competitions has a large effect on the financial benefits of competing outside of the domestic leagues. Larger European teams such as Arsenal F.C, Real Madrid C.F., Paris Saint-Germain, and others will still benefit in a similar manner as before but for the smaller teams such as ACF Fiorentina, participating in a European competition could be a critical component for their financial success.
According to this article by KPMG, just participating in the UEFA Champions League would bring in revenue of €15.64 million compared to just €2.94 million for participating in the Europa Conference League. This difference shows how important and rewarding it can be to qualify for one of these competitions.

Copa América organizers are still dealing with the aftermath of the logistical chaos that hit Hard Rock Stadium for Sunday night’s Argentina-Colombia final, which was ultimately delayed by more than an hour after thousands of unruly fans breached security. But the spotlight will quickly shift to an even bigger—and potentially even more challenging—international soccer event set to be played in North America.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, less than 23 months away, will bring a supersized version of Copa América to the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The newly expanded World Cup will be a 48-team competition—triple the 16 nations that competed in this summer’s tournament. And Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium is one of eight Copa América venues that will also host matches in ’26, along with another eight stadiums throughout the continent.
The expansion from the traditional 32 teams should shatter the World Cup attendance record of 3.58 million that is still standing from the last time the U.S. hosted in ’94. But, as fans from all around the world descend upon North America, there could be even more operational headaches for FIFA and local organizers in host cities.
For the 2026 World Cup, Hard Rock Stadium is set to host four group-stage matches, a round-of-32 match, one quarterfinal, and the third-place game.

TEXAS TRENDS TUESDAY
The FIFA Soccer World Cup happens every 4 years and is is arguably the biggest sporting event in the world.
In what could be a huge boost for the ecomomy, DFW and AT&T stadium will be hosting nine matches, including a semifinal showdown!
The announcement on February 4 brought joy and anticipation to football enthusiasts and local leaders alike.
This monumental event is expected to bring a significant economic boost, attracting thousands of fans and boosting revenue for local businesses, hotels, and restaurants.
However, hosting such a massive event also comes with challenges, including substantial expenses, uncertainty about economic returns, and the need for careful risk management.
Despite these challenges, the opportunity to showcase what North Texas has on a global stage and promote tourism in the region is undeniable.
As preparations continue, it's essential for organizers to carefully balance the potential benefits and challenges to ensure a successful and prosperous FIFA World Cup 2026 for North Texas

That time of the season again: Promotions and relegations
Every season we see the fight for promotions intensify. The increase in revenue apart from prestige is the obvious reason. That led to us at Sports Business Institute Barcelona to do a quick analysis on the possible increase in revenue on promotions
Taking the revenues of top teams away from each league, we find an average. That, essentially, would be the estimated jump from the average revenue of second tier league
(by the way, top teams contribute an astonishing share of club total revenues. Sample this:
#PremierLeague: top 6 contribute 56% of the total club revenues
#Bundesliga: top 2 contribute 37%
#Ligue1: PSG contributes 40%)
The chart shows the possible jumps
English football: Approx. €100+mn
German football: approx. €80mn
French football: approx. €50mn
